I'm Sure It Will Go Unnoticed By Most Buyers

Okay, so you are looking at building or repairing that deck of yours and want to get some ideas to make those deck improvements. You head over to your local Big Box Hardware store to look at some displays, check the prices, and collect some design ideas for your own home project. I do the same thing sometimes.

While at a local store I came across this display pamphlet showing some design options. Included in the photos was a shot of a gate. Gates are important to have but they do need to be build correctly to last. This one caught my attention because it was not right. That diagonal board is very important in the prevention of the gate sagging over time, it was put in at the wrong angle. Is that the way their installers do it? I hope not.

I'm certain that I am this will go unnoticed by most. My wife tells me that I have an eye for this sort of flaw detection that is of no use to anyone, she may be right. It never hurts to know how things should be done, the end user can choose to use it or not.

Haha that looks exactly like a gate I built myself for a deck many years ago in Ohio, they must have stolen my design!

Tom, interesting!  Do you have a picture of a gate with the proper angle?  I have seen many 45 degree diagonal boards in our area like the one pictured.

Oy.  I guess they didn't know how to cut the edges or just didn't want to do the extra cuts.  I see stuff like this all time (e.g. when edges aren't mitred).

OK, let me see... the board should be the other way? I might fail the test Tom... but I would make it hit the bottom and top exactly, there seems to be a gap there at both ends.

I had no idea when I logged on today there would be a test. The dog ate my books, I wasn't prepared... OMG... now what?

Well... it's certainly of use to YOU should you decide to build a gate! YOURS won't sag.

Tom,  Yes, one would need to know how it is to be done properly otherwise it would be over looked. I'm with Bruce Walter - how is it supposed to be?

Physics is physics.

The wrong angle is the wrong angle.

The right angle is the right angle.

Why?  Because gravity works.

I made my Donald put a wheel on the outter end for that reason. (to keep it from sagging.  Now sure which way our board goes.  Tag me when you put the right answer.  Inquiring minds

Maybe they did Stefan Winter .
Good point Bruce Walter . It's not the degrees of the board so much as the direction, it needs to be sloping in the other direction.

I noticed those miters too Debbie Gartner
You are so funny Andrea Swiedler , tests will be announced in the future!

Knowing how to build helps with some common problems Marte Cliff
I hope the illustration earlier helps Kathleen Daniels . I found an older post that may help too!
Gravity does work Jay Markanich , we can use it to our advantage.

I grew up in a family of building contractors - then married another one, so it all makes sense to me.

Good Monday morning Tom. I often see gates being built that do not have the diagonal. Very essential!

To not have any diagonal support is asking for trouble Michael Thornton

The idea is pretty simple once you see and understand the reason for that board James Dray
