Take a deep breath and count to 3....

Since September is  Realtor Safety month , thought I would share one of the most valuable lessons, taught to me by my Mother when I was just a little girl.

When my brother and I were having our spats..My Mother had a rule... " STOP, and take a deep breath, Count to 3,,,,,, 1001,1002,1003 , before you open your mouth"   This worked , if we did it... it was a long enough time to take moment and allow another thought....

When I was getting ready to take an important test in school,My Mother said " STOP, and take a deep breath, Count to 3, 1001,1002,1003 , before you answer" This allowed me to reread the options, and sometimes see that I had missed an important part of the question.

It helped me quit smoking cigarettes 10 yrs ago, as I heard her say ,, " STOP, and take a deep breath, Count to 3, 1001,1002,1003 , before you get a cigarette  out and light it." Proud to say I kicked that habit , by practicing a few breaths at a time~!!

Now as a Realtor... I  use her rule  when showing a home....

*When I pull up to the property. Stop...Deep breath..count to 3 look around..

( Do I feel safe getting out?)

*Walking to the front door/or where I need to go to get  to the lockbox, before getting key, Stop Deep breath count to 3..  Look around

( Are there people around that I   wasn't expecting?)

*Opening the door. Announce 'REALTOR', Take a deep breath count to 3 before entering.. Listen.

( Did I hear or see anything that needed to be addressed )

Just using this one little rule my Mother taught me, helped me curb my tongue, taught me to not jump to conclusions, and learn about will power..

It also is helping keep me safe by reminding me to BE AWARE...

While she has been in Heaven for many years,,, I know she is looking down smiling every time I take a deep breath and count to 3, 1001,1002,1003.

What is your safety tip for September?

Good morning Lesley,

It is good to be aware of your surroundings.

We used to have to count like that playing flag football!

As to my surroundings traing taught me that a long time ago and still have trouble sitting with my back to a door.

Make yourself a great day.

I do the same thing but no counting, always make wise choices and be aware. It is our first line of defense.

Have a great Sunday!

Understand the back to the door , Raymond E Camp ! A very successful businessman once told me , always be the first to arrive, and never put your back to the door , I believe he referred to it as the seat of power!

As a Realtor, Safety is always a growing concern, and am amazed at how often things could have been avoided if  someone had taken a few extra moments to be aware of their surroundings.

The most important home I sell is YOURS!

After events of this weekend in Houston, I don't know if there is any safety. A police officer was gunned down in cold blood at a gas station supposedly just because he was wearing a uniform.  My out of town clients asked me this weekend if a certain neighborhood was safe.  All I could say was "it was yesterday-today not so sure"

There's actually science behind that breathing technique, and I like that you use it whenever a situation calls for it. By slowing your breathing you are also slowing your heartrate, creating a calmer body and more focused mind.  Congrats on quitting smoking ten years ago!
