Home burglaries are on the rise in the Bay Area, and many homeowners do not protect their homes well enough.
We got broken into a few years back, simply because we left one of the front windows open by two inches.
I'm no expert in the matter but what can you do?
- Get good locks.
- Make sure the door and framing are of strong materials.
- Cover the windows with curtains, shutters. It can be something light just so it makes it hard to see.
- Put valuables away from windows.
- Get a good size dog. A chihuaha is a good alarm dog (for those who like litttle dogs).
- Turn the radio on. Buy two or three. If they are on timers so much the better.
- Put some of your lights on timers, and have the lights come on at various times. Also have a light on when you come home. Don't walk into a dark house.
- Get a standup cutout, the Terminator for example.
Upon a quick look into the house, it'll look like there's someone there.
- Buy a Fake TV to make it look like someone is watching TV.
- Get a home alarm. Simplisafe, Ring, ADT, other.
- Get security service, one that patrols your neighborhood like SC3-DVBE.
- Drop by your house once a day at different times. If you can, go home for lunch.
- Talk to your next door neighbors regularly. Go to their door to say hi or call them to say hi. Have their phone numbers in your smart phone.
- Be seen in front of your house when you get the mail or water the plants. Just stand in front sometimes for a few minutes to see who is driving by. Eat a sandwich.
- Pick up the newspaper daily.
- Put away the garbage containers promptly.
- Park your car in the driveway to make it look like you're home.
- Have people over once a week or every other week.
- Have an escape route in case someone is actually breaking in.
You can't stop burglaries but you can make it so you're not an easy target. Do the above mentioned things and you'll be better protected and feel better.
