If you are listing your single family home or townhouse for sale, you want to pay special attention to the front door so that it makes a great first impression.
Looking at homes for sale, there are 5 things that homeowners often overlook, and often create a bad first impression for buyers.
- The Paint Job: If you were meeting someone for the first time, you would put your best foot forward--you likely wouldn't show up in your $5 doorbuster tee-shirt. Give your front door a fresh coat of semi-gloss paint (or stain, if appropriate).
- The hardware: If the front door knob has seen better days, swap it out for a new one. If you have brass on the front of the house, consider changing it to a more contemporary color (black and oil rubbed brass are popular). If that is not feasible, at least make sure that the door knob looks good.
- The cobwebs and debris: There is nothing like being greeted at the front door by a bunch of cobwebs, spiders and dead bugs. Clean them off and circle back around regularly to keep the area clean. Make sure front door is clear of leaves (and in the winter, snow and ice).
- The doormat: This is an inexpensive way to 'dress up' your front porch. Don't go busy or bright here--elegant or contmeporary is best, depending on the look and feel of your entry.
- The plantings: A nice pot of flowers by the front door is always 'homey.' Make sure the bushes are not overgrown. Remove anything that looks like it has a blight or is loosing leaves.
You only get one chance to make that first impression--and so does your house! Don't lose the sale at the front door.
