Lantana surprise

Good morning everyone-I had heard from some folks that Lantana attracts butterflies and even hummers I think so when I happened to see these on clearance for a low price I decided to get 3 for a spot next to my orange butterfly weed. When I purchased them they were fairly small but in good condition and of course they are a perennial so I knew I could plant them and have them year after year with low maintenance.

Now what has been a wonderful surprise is that they have about tripled in size in the 2 months or less that I have had them especially the one on the closest end in the first pic. While the pics didn't come out as clear as I would have liked probably due to the sun being out but you get the idea of how big they are.

Now behind it I planted a orange hummingbird vine and while it hasn't flowered and probably won't til next yr as I just bought those shortly before the lantana. They will be orange and I got 4 of them.  Three of them are in the bed next to this one. They have also taken off and are growing well.  They were bareroot when I purchased them.  Some happy hummers for sure next yr.

In the second pic you can get a clearer pic of the hummingbird vine growing. I wound it all the way up the fence it had grown so much. I am pleased with all of these.

I love Lantanas, Sharon. (Probably where you heard about them).  They can become huge. My 6 ft. bush in my side yard was a $3.00 pot plant once.

Toni Weidman -Wow they get huge then. I know I have read about them here on AR so most likely from you. I love the yellow but would like other colors too. Will look for them next year. Mine weren't anymore that that price wise.  Hope you are doing well.

Sharon Lee ~ I hope the butterflies enjoy the beautiful flowers as much as you like planting and growing them, and I am sure the hummingbirds will be enjoying your efforts soon, too

Hi Jon Kolsky -I have seen several smaller butterflies on them but not the bigger ones. While I haven't seen hummers on them I believe I read they like them too. Have yourself a great week.

Kathy Streib

Not really on the green thumb. I have lost a number of plants so it is just do what I can and hope for the best. There have been smaller ones but haven't seen any bigger ones yet. Maybe next yr.

How nice that you plant with birds and butterflies in mind. I know these are very pretty plants, but they are also a thorny weed in cow pastures. Funny how perspective is everything.

Georgie Hunter R(S) -That is one of the main reasons it got so big to have a bird sanctuary. You are right. Perspective is everything indeed.

Hi, Sharon...I hope you get a lot of butterflies and hummers to your garden this year. I'm going to get my hummingbird feeders out in the next day or so. It's that time of the year.
