When clients ask me about home staging, I always tell them "less is more". What I mean by that is being a minimalist. This is when the look of the home is streamlined and orgnaized. It creates a feeling of calmness and relaxation.
Many people think by "less is more" that I want their home bare. Basically it means get rid of all the clutter, collections, extra furniture, etc. When selling your home, this means less to clean and dust as well, which helps your home stay show ready.
A "less is more" type home staging doesn't mean you have to change your colors. While minimalists use white, you can also use beige, tan, or gray as the common color. The accents in the home can be the texture to add depth.
Below are a few tips to stage your home with the "less is more" mentality:
- Make one element the focal point in the room.
- Use other decorative pieces to support it
- Hang limited pieces of artwork on the walls, leaving some walls blank
- Use one vase of flowers or one scuplture as an accent piece of surfaces
- Use solid colors not a pattern
- Use textures to add visual interest
- Use calming colors for flooring, window coverings and bed linens
