Tips for Achieving Work-Life Balance

By
Real Estate Agent with Royal LePage Benchmark

Working as a Real Estate Agent is not your typical profession, where you start your day at 9 and end by 5. The hours fluctuate and some days can be very long. As a Real Estate Agent, I have to be available for my clients on their schedule, which means showing houses during the evenings and on weekends. While most people are enjoying their weekends off to spend time with family and friends, I am typically working with my clients.

I am passionate about my career and the success I have achieved, however I recognize that there are certain challenges that threaten all of us in this business at one time or another. One of the biggest issues to reconcile is that precarious balance between work and home. In this profession, it is not uncommon to find it difficult to get time off or distinguish work hours from non-work hours. At times like this, time management has to be a priority.

The creation of smartphones, tablets and being able to pick up a wifi signal from just about anywhere makes it difficult to separate work from life. You are literally always available to your clients and as you strive to do the best job possible for them, answering emails and texts happens all the time. In this field responding promptly is important and is one key to the success I have experienced as a real estate professional.

Eventually, the demand of the job will overwhelm you. When that day comes it’s time to take a step back and reevaluate your priorities, without failing to meet the needs of your clients.  I avoid disappointing my clients by not letting myself get buried with unnecessary tasks. I use technology to my advantage to streamline my work, not let it take over. Its important to block out time for both family and business and stick to that schedule as much as possible while allowing for necessary interruptions. While it may be tempting to sneak in just one quick text or email, do your best to stay in the moment and give your full and undivided attention to the matter at hand.

Although it's sometimes hard to entirely exit work mode, sometimes due to the contagious excitement of your clients - it’s the best way to conduct business for the benefit of you and your clients. I welcome the hard work that comes with being a Real Estate Agent, it is satisfying and fulfills a passion in my life. To ensure you keep a good work-life balance use the tools of technology to schedule your time and to simply make your life easier. Enjoy the benefits of being a Real Estate Agent, while also cultivating a satisfying and potentially lucrative career.
