History in the Making...LSU cancels the game

Its my favorite time of year....Football season!

We have all been anxiously awaiting football season and the first LSU and McNeese State games opened with a matchup of these two Louisiana teams playing in Baton Rouge.  Lake Charles McNeese Cowboy fans showed up in style to support our home team as we traveled to Baton Rouge.  There is nothing more fun than a road trip right?   This road trip turned out to be more like a comedy scene from "Family Vacation".  Little did we know the sunshine would turn into rain clouds and we would only be in our stadium seats for a short time before the monsoon arrived and we fled in our rain ponchos!

We arrived to the LSU campus with the sun shining and  It did not take me long to find the "friendly blue and gold" tailgating spot!  The McNeese Alumni Center along with several other local sponsors planned a huge tailgate event selling 2,000 tickets which went to benefit  the McNeese band!

It was hot outside but once we got inside the air conditioned Alex Maddox Field House fans enjoyed food, fellowship and entertainment by the McNeese band and the Cowgirl Kickers!

GAME DAY FUN

gameday

Here in Southwest Louisiana  our weather can change quickly we are used to afternoon thunderstorms.  It can be sunny one minute and raining the next and will usually blow over unless its a true tropical storm!  This being said, There is a saying with LSU Football that "it never rains in Tiger Stadium" because by 7pm kickoff any threat of rain usually passes.  Guess that urban myth goes out the window after last night's game history.  I dont think a game has been cancelled by LSU since 1918 during WWI!!!

We love our football in the South and true fans will endure the rain coming prepared with raincoats and ponchos!  After only seeing 5 minutes of the game, the players left the field due to "lighting" and the officials called a rain delay.  Players were first ordered off the field in a scoreless game with 10:08 left in the first quarter after lightning was observed in the area around 6:50 p.m. Because NCAA rules prevent players from taking the field until 30 minutes after an area lightning strike, the best-case scenario would have been a delay approaching five hours with the first quarter resuming close to midnight.  Wind driven heavy rain came and the announcer advised everyone to seek shelter!

4 Hours later the game was officially canceled and called a "tie game".  To LSU officials' knowledge, the school had never had a game canceled in the modern era of Tigers football. They have postponed games after hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 and after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, but those games were eventually played.  This is the first time McNeese has had a game canceled due to the weather after it had already started. The Cowboys had three games canceled in the 2005 season due to Hurricane Rita. beforeaftergame

We also have an old southern saying "if you don't like the weather, wait around because it's bound to change" and that it did.  The highly anticipated match-up for the McNeese Cowboys against the LSU Tigers washed away just five minutes into the contest as a lightning delay that lasted nearly four hours finally put the axe on the game at 10:42 – 3 hours and 57 minutes after kickoff. McNeese will open the 2015 season at home next Saturday in Cowboy Stadium at 6 p.m.  Rain or Shine, I'm still SOLD on the McNeese Cowboys!

Marilyn,  this was a safe choice for everyone in the stadium.   It looks like you had a great time, in spite of the rain.  Will they reschedule the game?

I spoke with an electrical engineer last week who shared information about people he knew who were struck by lightening and lived to share their stories.  It made me realize that those who tell us not to take a shower, talk on a phone, or stay outside during a storm have good reason to share their cautions.  One of the people struck by lightening was in her kitchen doing dishes! That got my attention.

Happy Football Season!

It may have rain the game out but you sure put a sunny spin on the game!  Great photos and story.

Sharon Parisi now I too am going to be sure to be a little more careful when the lightening arrives.
