Rather romantic. Searcy AR at night 1956.

Searcy AR at night 1956 yearbook Harding College

This is a picture that is unusual in that it is in black and white and shows the city of Searcy AR at night.  We are gazing East from Arch Street toward the First Methodist Church.  Almost no vehicles spoil our view of the streets and the parking meters.

Who remembers parking meters?  I do.  You had to keep them fed with nickles and quarters. Who remembers Western Auto on the right?  I do but I don't remember Firestone Tires .

The light poles appear to be decorated so it may be Christmas and I can't figure out those giant orbs in the sky.  But it is a different and rather romantic picture of the downtown area.  Borrowed from the 1956 Petit Jean yearbook.

That's a neat shot. Do you not have parking meters any longer? We certainly do around here.

From my phone book of l957: Easy Pay Tire Store 223. W. Arch sold Goodyear Tires.
Next is Arnholt's Home and Auto Store 221 W. Arch phone 59. That's probably where the Firestone Tires were sold.

Great picture.

Plenty of parking meters in Chicago, now most take credit cards also though.

Don, that is Anita!!!!  And if you look closely you'll see Don Thompson on the top of the pole # 2 on the left taking a picture of Anita  with the fancy car!

Stefan, yes, parking meters are retired in Searcy.

Karen, no parking meters any more.

Anita, good sleuthing with that phone book.

Barbara,

It would be great if Harding University would publish a “Searcy Through the Years” book from all the great Petit Jean photos they have.

I remember this scene well as I lived on Arch street. Carlene Dodd's dad, Carl Dodd owned Western Auto and the radio station. I attended the First Methodist Church. Wonderful times and memories.

Not to argue , but we thought Jim James owned Western Auto in 56. Smith Vaughn was on the East corner with Sowells Furniture, Oklahoma Tire, Daily Citzen, Western Auto then Firestone with Young's Goodyear on the West corner. We are not sure if have Sowells placed correctly?

I did not live here then so we'd have to have some expert Sleuths to solve this mystery.
