E-Signings, Should I or Should I not....offer this as a service?

Lately, I have been getting a lot of e-mails regarding e-signings.  It appears to be popular in the California area, however I haven't heard a great deal about in PA.  We had the big push to do e-notarization in PA as a pilot program and I believe there has been maybe 1-2 signings that was performed successfully.

I had the training for e-notarization, however to date I have never received a call from any entity requesting that service. So, many notaries in PA haven't really jumped on board because of this.  Also, you have to seek state approval for a 1 year term, which requires obtaining an electronic notary seal, software and an Enjoa for recording electronic entries and identifying signers with biometrics.  (a electronic pad device that a person signs, like at a store).  You do not actually have to purchase their equipment, however the other requirements are necessary.

So now I am pondering if I should offer E-Signings as a service?  I like playing a part in the cutting edge, however I not sure if this is a winner.

Has any one in PA benefited from offering these services thus far?

To my CA friends, do you really get a lot of work from offering these services?

Do consumers find this beneficial?  Are they given copies of electronic files for the records?

What are your thoughts?

Pamela, I personally have no interest at this time and thankfully I haven't any requests for the service. Here's a link to a recent blog entry about the subject.

Dan,

I believe in getting involved in the latest cutting edge tech services to render beneficial services to consumers.  However, there is something to be said for the good old traditional way.  If it ain't broke why fix it?  Some of these new tech tools seem to be overrated and very costly. It used to be a time when you could buy one item and it performed all functions you needed it to do.  Now, you got to buy all these gadgets, along with service plans to render one service.  Now don't me wrong if e-signs is a hit..I may have to give it some play but the means should justify the end....

Hey Lashon,

Thanks for sharing the blog..... Momma always said, "If you don't know, you better ask somebody"  I ponder no more...I can't even imagine being a situation of that nature and nor do I wish to.  I would much rather continue the traditional round table, rather than be hovered in a group reviewing documents transmit on a laptop.

Hi, Pamela

I haven't heard of anyone paying $100 or more for an esigning.  With the equipment and wireless service we would have to purchase and maintain, doing these signings just wouldn't be worth it unless the signings routinely paid $200 with more for distance travel (over 15 miles one way).

Like you, esignings sound like a pain for the borrower and notary.  Sounds like the lender is trying to cut costs at great inconvenience to everybody but themselves.  Heck with 'em.

Sorry for the double posting, but I keep forgetting to log in.

LaShon, you are on top of it as usual. Thanks for sharing this informative blog. I am equipped and ready for e-sign only because I have up to date equipment which will probably be out of date by next year. I am waiting for the first call which will allow me to comment about the process.

CA isn't  on the cutting age of electronic notarization and my guess is it is going to be  a few years away.

If I were going to purchase a computer in the next year or two it would definitely be a laptop because when it comes (and it will) a laptop will be the starting point.
