Keep Your Computer Running Clean, Clear Out Unnecessary Files

Once your work load begins to wind down a bit in the winter months you should be engaging in a few housekeeping activities to better prepare yourself for next year.  This includes keeping your computers up to shape.  There are plenty of cleaning steps you can take to ensure your computer continues running at optimal conditions. About every September we clean out all the desktop computers in our office.  This helps set us up for the next big Highlands Ranch property management cycle.

First you will want to actually physically clean the dust off of the components inside your computer.  All towers and cases are easy to open up and see where dust has accumulated the most.  Only use compressed air to do so.  Be careful to spray the air in a way to get the dust outside of the box.  You don’t want to just move it around inside.  Don’t touch any components inside the case.  You may send a static shock to the part, which would render it useless.  When cleaning dust off of fans, be sure to stick a pencil in the fan blade so they don’t spin at a high rpm when you hit it with the compressed air.

Be sure your OS is updated.  Make sure your Windows Update option is the most current version.   Remove any old programs you don’t use or any bloatware programs that may have been installed on your machine when you bought it.  This is done by going to the Add or Remove Programs option in the Control Panel.   This will fully uninstall those unwanted programs.

Lastly you will want to download two free programs, Malwarebytes and CCleaner. These two programs will scan your entire system and remove any unnecessary files.  Supplement this with the Disk Cleanup option found on your specific drives on your computer.  This will eliminate a lot of temporary files that are taking up your hard drive space.  After these steps you should get in the habit of doing it every so often.  This will extend the life of your computer and keep it running well.

I was been in corporate IT for 15 years (5 of which in tech support), prior to going into real estate.  CCleaner is by far one of the best programs out there!  I've seen it breathe new life into computers.  Their Defraggler product is great for defragmenting your hard drive (another step to speed up your PC).  It is far superior to the built-in Windows one.

I did not realize how dirty the inner workings of a desktop got until I replaced my hard drive a few months ago.
