While approaching the Williamsburg area along Interstate 64, motorists are met with a large sign, proclaiming the area as America's Historic Triangle. The city of Williamsburg is located between Jamestown Island to the southwest, which is home of the first permanent English settlement in the United States and the battlefield in Yorktown is the site where the Revolutionary War was won. Yorktown is southeast of Williamsburg.
The picture of my grandson with a chicken was taken at the Jamestown Settlement where the outdoor museum includes huts, small animals, a church and items that would have been found at the original settlement. Replicas of the three ships that landed at Jamestown Island, Susan Contance, Godspeed and Discovery, are located at the settlement.
The city of Williamsburg was the first capital of Virginia. The governor's mansion, pictured to the left welcomes thousands of tourists every year.
Carriage rides, like the one pictured here are available to visitors of Colonial Williamsburg.
Duke of Gloucester or DOG street is open only to foot traffic during the day and is a great place to see people in period costume or to watch the fife and drum corp marching down the street. DOG street is also a great place to watch the fireworks on July 4th or at the Grand Illumination, which is held the first Sunday night in December every year.
