Sometimes We Can Take Going to the Beach For Granted.

If you are familiar with my posts, then you know how much I love the delray beach at sunrisebeach.  Being able to walk by it on the sidewalk; sitting in a chair and listening to the beautiful sound of the waves as they pay their short visit to the shore; and walking along the shoreline, looking for small treasures from the sea to add to my shell collection… are my daily vitamin pill.

But, what if something as easy as going to the beach was something you could no longer do?

Yesterday, I read a Facebook post from Terri Poehler  asking us to share a photo of a special path along the beach that is wheelchair accessible.  Terri’s daughter, Sarah, has Muscular Dystrophy and can no longer enjoy the beach as she once had.  (I called Terri to get her permission to share this)

beach wheelchair- delray beachI shared the photo and just for grins, decided to tag the Delray Beach Parks and Recreation Department.

Lo and behold, they commented on my post with some good news… Delray Beach has 2 chairs to meet their needs at the Lifeguard station at A1A and Atlantic, and 1 at Atlantic Dunes Park. This is one of the chairs.

The best part is that there are plans to build a ramp similar to the one Terri shared in her Facebook post.

If you know of someone who needs assistance at the beach, there are companies that design and sell beach wheelchairs.

If you are in a beach area how about suggesting these chairs or the special paths to your community!

So glad that Delray Beach is ADA compliant and that Terri and her daughter Sarah can continue to enjoy the beauty of the water and the sunrise.

Good Friday morning Kathy Streib -

What a great reminder for us to never take our good health for granted and lend a hand to those who need assistance. I've been following Terri's post of FB.

Good morning, Kathy -- this is yet another example of the positive aspects of social media.  Hats off(or should they remain on?)and plenty of sunscreen to Delray Beach Parks and Recreation Department and others responsive to the needs of people.

Its funny Kathy...I was just in Sedona AZ...such a beautiful place. I loved it but realized how much I need the beach when I was 1000 miles away from it.

Kathy,

What a lovely post, I have seen many adapted chairs here on the beach, and I love that people are still enjoying it.    We need to get to the beach, as we have been so busy...and it has been hot and muggy...A

Kathy,

Super kudo’s to you and the Del Ray Beach Parks and Recreation Dept. Now that is some good news.

As much as I love life here in Colorado I desperately miss my Southern California beaches. I’m 1,084.9 driving miles away but I’ll be flying out soon.

Social media and being on-line has it's negative side but this is a great example of a positive that came out of simply tagging the Delray Beach Parks Department!

I love beaches too, Kathy.  I don't get to go as often as you, because I live about a 100 miles away.  I do think we often take activities of walking a beach for granted.  It's great that your area is improving access for those who would otherwise be kept from it.

How neat is that...I think it's great to have wheelchairs for those that can't enjoy the beach on their own two feet. Nice post, Kathy.

There are things that we that for granted . . . . that others may only dream about doing.

Good luck and success.

That is really cool to see them accommodate those with challenges.  Until you can't do something it is often taken for granted. Enjoy life every day!

Hi Kathy Streib ,  We don't live by the beach, but I think that is a great idea.  It's a good thing that you spoke up.  That's what people need to do.

Kathy - our sands are so hard packed, that you could use a wheelchair on our beach with no problem. Usually it is easier to get from paved ramps, rather than from wooden ramps between the building toi avoid getting stuck in the soft sand
