Most of the buyer population comprise of couples or small families wanting to buy a home to raise their children. And whether the husband likes it or not, the mother has a huge role in choosing the house in which they want to raise their family. But what do modern moms look for in a home?
- Space vs Layout. Traditionally, moms want to have a big house with lots of spaces to move around. This trend is now changing as more and more families are looking at the configuration of the house more than the square footage. For example, some families prefer open floor plans than separate dining room and living rooms. They prefer continuity over formal space. Moms may also prefer a big kitchen with a big island because everything happens in the kitchen. Instead of a separate home office, parents want an office nook or a cubicle in the corner of the living room so they can keep tabs on their children while they're working.
- Wide Stairs. Parents want wide stairs so they can carry their kids or babies without having to go sideways or bumping on the railing. It's also great for hauling laundry and other stuff upstairs.
- Garage Location. The garage should be on the same level as the house because carrying kids up and down the stairs would be troublesome. Plus, it also helps if the garage is next to mud room and the laundry area.
- Mudroom. We usually hear moms yelling at their kids to remove their shoes before going up the stairs or to drop off their dirty clothes before going in. Moms would love a house with a mudroom because they don't have to clean the house every time a child gets in. All dirty laundry, gloves, shoes, umbrellas and coats should be left at the mudroom. No more dirty shoe prints or water dropping off wet coats.
- Lots of storage. Kids are messy. And they have a lot of toys and stuff they outgrow. Parents, especially moms, want a house with lots of cabinets, closets, basement, attics, and spaces under the stairs to use as storage of toys, old clothes, old school books, dirty shoes and other things that come with growing kids.
Most of all, parents want to have a house where they raise a healthy and happy family.
