Trashing the Brand

Reality TV AgentWhat would it take for you to agree to do the following:

Appear on national TV, engage in apparent illegal, unethical and deceptive behavior, and present yourself as motivated by greed, spite and pettiness?

Have you ever watched any of the Million Dollar Listing franchise "reality TV" programs?* There are members of our profession who do exactly that every week in front of enthralled audiences, and I can only assume they are extremely well-paid and protected behind a legal screen of disclaimers and consents from everyone involved in their so-called deals.

But would money be enough? Sure, this is a marvelous branding opportunity, if you want to be known as a nightmare amalgam of every negative Realtor stereotype out there. Maybe just getting that kind of exposure is enough payback for the truly attention-starved. And maybe, in some strange way, it would actually lead to increased business, as the show's stars routinely claim. (I'm wondering what kind of clients would be attracted to agents of this type).

But I'd never make that bet. I'm pretty sure it would seriously damage my brand, just as I'm pretty sure that these shows seriously damage all of our brands.

Of course, none of this is real - it's just entertainment. We can look at these programs and understand what the producers at Bravo are doing to get ratings. The problem is that the audience doesn't have the context that we do - they can't distinguish the real from the fictional.

I've had some disturbing conversations with people who watch these shows, even casually, and I'm appalled by the extent that they accept what they see as representative of the way we do business. One gentleman recently told me he would never use a Realtor because he didn't want his agent wheeling and dealing on his property behind his back. Others note the greed and the back-stabbing, the scheming and disrespect for the client.

This stuff hurts us. Yet we sit meekly on the sidelines, mute and unwilling to protect our image, while others do violence to it in the name of entertainment. If we had a real national association, one interested and capable of standing up for our interests, this would be an excellent issue. And the least acceptable outcome would be a very visible disclaimer at the start and finish of each episode, in very large, readable type, that noted that what is portrayed isn't, in fact, the actual practice of real estate.

*Here's a disclaimer of my own: I do not watch these shows. However, a person in my household, who shall remain nameless, does, and hence, I am subjected to unavoidable exposure to them on more occasions than is good for my blood pressure.

Hi Dick,I am sure that the profession is harmed by these poor behaved brats, but not nearly as much as it is by some of the poorly educated agents that get turned out with a new shiny license, ready to practice on their friends and relatives.

Btw,

After reading Pat's post that was inspired by this one I stopped over at Josh Flagg's blog to see if he had posted anything new since his featured premiere post a year or so ago, and I found his fan from your household.

I did not know that Mary Greenberg had a blog until then, I am happy to be following her blog now.

So something good came from this tv show, I found Mary's blog.

Trusted for Service, Respected for Results

its a scripted realty show, its primary purpose is entertainment sadly many viewers will see it as reality that entertains. Nothing anybody can do about the perception of Realtors that result, NAR and others looking at this as they do everything else through the prism of the bottom line. What they could have, should have done is a mute point, once they sold our listings to Zillow, Trulia, Realtor.com  etc. it was crystal clear we Realtors were an after thought, if thought of at all.

We make it easy. You make it home.

I read Patricia's post first then came over to read yours. I enjoy watching the shows as they are entertaining and I enjoy seeing homes in other parts of the country but I take the agents with a grain of salt. Of course, I'm in the business and know better but realize most of the public does not.

When I  first knew and saw afew of the shows, it didn't take me long to get really bored with the bull and totally apalled with the bad ethics. One show I really dislike is on HGTV and it's called "LOVE IT OR LIST IT". Come on people get an inspection. Then get bids/quotes.  I stress inspections to my buyers and my sellers for pre sale information that has lead to good sales with little negotiation.

I applaud your distaste to this kind of exposure - and as you mentioned the consumer has no idea what is real and what is acting, what is the norm and what is over the top "look at me" activities.

I guesss if they followed us around we would be pretty boring.   Do you think that they would tape the ten minutes you do before the showing to straighten things out, maybe wash the dish or two in the sink (or more), pick up the pet poop the nervous pet and homeowner leave behind - no.  There is so much more to our profession then the bad behavior we see on television, movies and books.  Wow the profession itself is a feast for these producers, always easy to pick the bad apples out of the crate - and isnt that exactly what they are looking for - not the fresh fruit.   I like to think of myself and the members of ActiveRain as the fresh fruit in the crate.  Thank you for expressing what so many I us feel and expressing it so well.

The agents on those shows make me cringe. Unfortunately, the general public does not have the frame of reference that we do.

Dick- I have a lot of people ask me if I watch those shows...  I always tell them that I love my job but it is still work- so i do not spend my spare time watching them.  They usually go on to say that that do but know  that it is junk TV;)  I have never seen them but what you describe seems like they should lose their licenses!

I can't imagine ever going on TV and behaving this way... it truly takes a "special" kind of person to be willing to live under this reality TV microscope. Interestingly, Dick, some years ago when I was still with Keller Williams I wrote a post for members only commenting on the fact that KW allowed its agents to go on TV and behave in certain ways that to me were totally unacceptable. This was in response to a reality show I'd tuned into by accident and then sat watching appalled out of my mind. The majority of responses I received to my post was what I thought of as a kneee-jerk defense of KW and no reaction whatsoever to the antics of these agents in a KW office, where you couldn't miss that it was KW. By that time, I wasn't sure if I was more dismayed by the KW agents on the show or by the responses I received  to my post on AR.

I also don't watch these shows. They are staged and not the real world. The deals are already made before it hits the taping would be my guess.

Hey Dick Greenberg ... thank you for your post. I am going to only about half agree with you on this one. First, it should be noted that there are VERY CLEAR violations that take place on all of these shows. I certainly agree there, but then ... they are made for TV as well.

The part that I most disagree with on this post is that our business is not like what they show on television. I guess it's different in the sense that we don't usually go out for a $600 lunch to negotiate a deal. Not every deal is negotiated verbally and admittedly ... the show is designed to "act out" the negotiations because no one would watch a show like that if they just saw us pushing paper and discussing who gets the washer and dryer on paper for an hour a week.

However, our business is cut throat ... it is back-stabbing ... people are super unethical ... it's less common to find a Realtor® that knows what they are doing and can serve their clients properly. I am by no means perfect. If our state and national associations were better at policing some of these issues then we would all rest a little easier (totally agree with you there) but these shows do shine some light on the raw side of the business that I think is more real than most are willing to accept. Doesn't make it right by the way but I would argue that's more normal than not.

I get lots of comments and questions from clients that watch the shows (I admit it's a guilty pleasure of mine) but I know that not everything on there is real and while the deals are real in most cases ... the negotiations are staged to show well to a TV audience. That said, I've yet to find a prospective client that I was not able to clarify or ease their mind on how something worked that was different than depicted on TV. It's like talking to someone that believes everything they read online ... I don’t think these shows are a detriment to the business at all ... I think the daily interactions that clients have with their agents or the actions they hear about from the agent on the other side, the lack of policing from local … state … and national associations is a problem, how easy it is to pass an exam for a license to sell real estate, the lack of training (at all) that’s required to sell in this business … I think these are all much bigger problems.

Probably rambling at this point but would love to hear some thoughts on this. Do you REALLY think TV shows like this are having that bad of an impact on this industry?

I appreciate your honesty, as I have read many other responses that I feel are just as forthright. It's a very interesting blog post and I am glad I came across it. Oh, and by the way, I did share my thoughts yesterday on how I feel about this "soap opera" and the impact it is having on this industry. I agree that reality TV doesn't even register on the monitor in comparison to the REAL problems facing our industry.

Dick I really enjoyed your post and all the comments. I think the key thing here is what I watch the NYC and LA Million Dollar Listing shows. are just "entertainment"  unfortunately a lot of viewers have forgotten this major point.

However, there nothing that all the hard work agents and local and regional brokers can do about programs like "LA Million Dollar Listing" the only thing that they can control is their own professionalism and how they work and treat their clients!

We have a flip home show. It brought a barrage of protests charging the realtor/flipper was misreprenting lenders. He claimed that he was honest. We never have heard any thing good about that group or claims..... Buyers beware.

I've seen about 5 minutes of one of these shows and couldn't take it any longer.  I tell my clients at our very first meeting, what you see on reality TV is far from reality.  As a matter of fact, the process is NOTHING like what you see.

I also came over from Patricia's post.  I wasn't at Inman Connect this summer, but I data-streamed it and Madison Hildenbrand and the two Altman Brothers were prominently featured as headliners .. with (presumably) real estate agent attendees lining up to hear them.  Madison Hildenbrand appeared in Houston at the invitation of one of our agent groups and the event sold out the first day (agents only).  So yes,  I do believe that consumers absolutely think they are "true-to-life" realtors and that reallly is what the "inside scoop" is like --- but it also seems more than a few on the agent side of the business have a take-a-selfie-with-me affinity as well.

Thanks for your post! You grabbed my attention and got me thinking. At this point, I'm not comfortable with disciplining high profile real estate agents in very popular reality tv shows that are akin to soap operas. Million$ LA and NY have evolved into something very different from their first seasons, which is the way reality tv works. Highly competitive, it's only as good as it's last episode. But, I'm not convinced that these these types of shows are a serious threat to the real estate industry. To me, the public's peaked curiosity has more to do with the personal lives of these agents than with anything else. This is still new territory. Just like social media has evolved over the years, I think this is a work in progress. I'm going to dig into this deeper on my new AR blog that I upgraded yesterday. I look forward to more of your posts.
