Do you know the right way to pronounce the "Carillon"

The Carillon in Richmond, VA

For my first few years in Richmond, I avoided making reference to the Carillon simply because I wasn't sure I was pronouncing it correctly. Was it Care - a- lon or was it Car-rill-ion?  And of course none of my friends knew either. We'd just refer to it as the "other side of Carytown" or "that neighborhood near the big bell tower."  So as I began to make some friends in that neighborhood, I would discretely pull them aside and ask them for their pronunciation.  After I felt I had surveyed enough people, I was comfortable with the correct pronunciation.

Now that we've gotten the pronunciation out of the way, let's talk about this great neighborhood tucked away within the City of Richmond, VA.  The Carillon neighborhood is basically to the west of Byrd Park and south of Carytown. It is called the Carillon after the big Carillon tower, which is a World War I Memorial. Trust me, you can't miss the tower. The tower is actually the 20th tallest structure within the city limits of Richmond.

One of the many things that I love about the Carillon neighborhood is it's "walk-ability" to so many great locations within the city. Here are a few of my favorites that are quick walk from the Carillon neighborhood:

  • Byrd Park- Lots of room to run and play all over Byrd Park, which is one of the most popular parks within the City of Richmond. The Vita course is very popular destination for runners. The paddle boats at Fountain Lake are fun ... but watch out for those ducks ... they sure are mean!
  • Arts in the Park- A great event each Spring (April/May) where you can find lots of great local and regional artists works.
  • Carytown- All the shopping and dining you could ever want.
  • Maymont- Some of the most beautiful grounds in the City. Have kids?  The petting zoo is a local favorite.  And be sure not to forget the Maymont Mansion.  It's all free, but donations are recommended.

The Carillon neighborhood also has an active association - The Carillon Civil Association (CCA), which promotes and supports the unique, historical aspects of the neighborhood, the energy and fellowship of the residents and the ability to provide cultural benefits to the city of Richmond as a whole.

What about the real estate?

Ok, Ok, you know I was getting to that. One of the things that I appreciate about the Carillon is the diversity in the neighborhood. As you drive down the tree lined streets, you'll notice that no two homes are alike.  Originally built in the 1930's and 1040's, everyone's home is unique. You'll find primarily brick, but there's still a nice mix of wood siding, stucco, etc.  And there's also a large range in sizes. Some homes are as small as 1,000 square feet. But you'll also find some that are 5,000+ square feet. That's quite a big range in size.  It's also not uncommon to see some great renovations done in this neighborhood.  Here is one that I showed last year that had a renovation that I  fell in love with.  It was STUNNING inside!
