Before You Leave The House Don't Forget To Take A Second Look

By
Real Estate Agent with The Top Team @ Charles Rutenberg Realty 255 Executive Dr, Plainview NY 11803

We have a seller that does not want to be home when she has a showing. She doesn't want us to accompany the showing agent, but she doesn't want to be there either.

When we notify her that another Realtor is going to show, she wants to run out of the house as fast as possible.

She doesn't mind having a lockbox on her front door, and doesn't mind leaving a Realtor and buyer alone.

We advised her from the start, that not every Realtor is considerate and some may forget to turn off a light or close a cabinet door.

Even though we will remind the showing agent during the scheduling appointment to take a second look and make sure all the lights are off and cabinet and drawers closed, sometimes they forget.

However, on one particular day, the showing agent made a huge MISTAKE...

Not only did she leave the front door unlocked, she left the key still in the door, out of the lockbox!

Although the seller did not get mad a us, she doesn't want this agent showing her house again. (The Agent's excuse was she was in a hurry to get to her next appointment).

Showing agents, we know what it's like to be busy with buyer clients, and we show lots of homes and condos too...

But, we have NEVER left a door unlocked with the key in it!

Really what were you thinking?

Showing Agents, Just Another Reminder...

Before You Leave The House...Don't Forget To Take A Second Look!

Gosh, that really is a huge oversight.  I don't blame that seller for wanting to exclude that agent.  Very careless.

Good morning Larry and Sheila. I had an instance where the ket was left in the door during a showing and taken during the showing. The key should never be left in the door period.

Yes, I've had this happen once as well.  The showing agent was very apologetic and came with me to the sellers to apologize personally.

Sadly it does happen...  To gain professional respect, we need to act like a professional.  Mistakes/oversights do happen and sellers need to be fore-warned -- just like you prepared your client.

Good morning Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Call 631-805-4400 (c) ,

There is no other appointment that is more important then securing a home you have just shown to clients. This is just common courtesy and part of your job. Many times agents leave a back door unlocked..really agents..how would you feel if someone did this to your personal home?

Good morning Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Call 631-805-4400 (c). How crazy is that, but not anything that hasn't happened before. It is hard to understand that some can make mistakes like this, especially when there can be so much liability.

This is a good story to share. It is easy to leave something unsecured when you are in a rush. Home safety and security should be a priority in the minds of showing agents.

Yikes!!  Not a good excuse for leaving the key in a door, and unlocked, period!   We all make mistakes, but let's take care of the home we are showing!!

Larry and Sheila, wow that's horrible! My sellers would say the same and I'd report the agent. There's no appointment that's worth leaving a house unsecured. I'm sure this agent wouldn't want that to happen to her own house.

Ain't this the truth Larry & Sheila. Not all people are considerate. Be professional and think of others.

I've said it many times before here on AR and I know it's not a popular stance but I do not like lock boxes and I don't think homes should be shown without the listing agent present. That said....I understand this presents a problem for many agents and there are plenty of sellers who are just fine with their agent not being present.

I insist on my agent being present for every showing. I've sold two homes this way without a problem. Yes, my agent is human and capable of leaving a light on. I understand this. A key left in the door is careless.
