As a Courtesy to You Mr. Gilbert, We will waive the Interest Charges..

Today I had the customer service department of a major retailer tell me over the phone ‘As a courtesy to you Mr. Gilbert we will waive the interest charges from your latest bill”. I was taken aback as Wait a Darn Minute it was part of the original deal and not a courtesy to me..Let me explain..

Back in early August I found and purchased a replacement gas cooktop as the original cooktop we were using in our Katy TX kitchen had more than reached the end of its useful life. I found the cooktop on the internet plus the subject retailer would install the new cooktop for a reasonable fee and haul away the old one. We have one of this retailer’s credit cards and I wanted to use this card. As I was going through the various online windows, I was told I could choose an additional 5 % discount or buy the cooktop interest free for 18 months since my order was over a certain dollar amount threshold. I have been a financial guy my entire career and it was a no brainer to select the interest free option versus paying their over bloated interest rate. Since there were numerous windows to go through I did not print the screen with the offer and my acceptance but just the actual order for the stove, maintenance agreement and installation fee page. Good deal in my mind so far.

The cooktop was installed and looks great and works very well. This was a huge improvement over the old now 16 year old cooktop. I figured out that I wanted to pay this off in 12 months instead of 18 months and set up automatic payments each month for the calculated amount. So far so good but not so fast as I have had a few issues with this retailer in the past concerning their billing and credit card practices.

What is this interest charge was my out loud comment ( plus several other words I will not repeat) when I opened the first statement I had received which shows the original balance in addition to my initial calculated payment. My mind was saying wonderful as here we go again!

I called the credit card phone number this morning and was of course routed to an outsourced call center in South East Asia. I had this experience way too many times in the past and there has never been a good result! I could barely understand a word this person was saying and I immediately asked to speak to someone in the US. I have to say I was shocked as I actually got transferred to the US within a reasonable amount of waiting time. Numerous times in the past when I have made this type of request the call is dropped after I have been waiting for a fairly long period of time on hold.

I explained the problem and the customer service person in the US and she told me the above comment as they would waive the one month interest charges as a courtesy to me for being a good customer! Total nonsense is what I thought of this comment.  I took a deep breathe to try to stay calm and then explained how their system had made this interest free offer since my purchase was over $500 and I was also offered instead of the interest free period of time an additional 5% discount.  I then threw into the conversation how their system made a similar offer yesterday when I was investigating buying a double oven from their web site. I did this the purchase investigation on purpose to see once again how they had made the original offer. After a few short minutes the retailer agreed to waive the interest charges and put all three purchased items into the interest free for 18 months bucket. A win for the good guys.. Yeah!!

I am writing this post to warn other folks about this what I think is a game being played by this retailer and I am sure there are more out there. Next time I get any type of offer on the internet or anywhere else, I will make sure I print it and save the printed copy with the order. Pretend there was no offer and charge interest to see if they can get away with it is the game I fear is being played.  A new twist on the old bait and switch crap..

I will not mention the retailers name but if you know me and call I will tell who it is..

This is what I will need to drink this evening after this experience..

Why are we forced to deal with this kind of crap?  If only they had honored their initial word, you wouldn't need a few glasses of wine tonight and would not have wasted your time this monring.  Never ceases to amaze me.

Robert (Bob) Gilbert - this is the customer service and billing pattern now. Unless you catch it and call them, you are likely to be 'punished'. And in this age of no paper bill, these things are common. (And as much common is the 'cortesy'!)

I wonder if these retailers were obligated to pay for the time and effort that we have to go through to correct their mistakes, then they wouldn't make so many of them?

I had a similar  experience this month on one of my revolving charge cards. I hate having to call and fight with them and I am going to save that call for next week. Or, have my daughter do it. She is much better at out talking any customer service rep.

Does the retailer begin with "L?"  If so, I had an experience where the store said and did two separate things.

Hi Robert (Bob) Gilbert

It is terrible that you must spend time calling and trying to get charges reversed after they advertised free interest. Customers should be more dilligint about checking their bills as I am sure this happens to hundreds of purchasers. Glad it worked out for  you.
