Minnewaska brush fires are still burning after 3 days

What an awful scene. As you look up to see the beautiful mountain range, all you can see is smoke billowing from different spotsSmoke rises from a large brush fire on the Shawangunk Ridge along U.S. Route 44/state Route 55 on Thursday. Purchase a copy of this photo. along The Shawangunk Ridge. My car was covered in soot this morning and the blue sky is looking cloudy from the smoke.

The old timers say that this is ok, just a natural part of ecology. I guess that is ok if there aren't any homes around...and the pollution that we are inhaling probably isn't great. I pray for everyone's safety that is working on this fire ...

There were prescribed fires planned for this year, is this one that got out of hand? it has jumped the Highway and closed it down, somehow I don't think that would have been the plan

Hi Patrice,

I am so sorry to hear about the fires in your area.

I was evacuated and homeless for 8 days during our Southern California Wildfires, and it is not a fun experience. You have no idea if your home survived until you go back 8 days later to see what is left. We were fortunate and still had a home.

Thank God there are no homes near the fire. I will hope the best for you.

The comment about the fire being a prescribed burn is completely false. Not only is that terribly inaccurate so is the fact that it jumped the highway. Please don't make up rumors about such a serious situation!!

My comment on the fire being prescribed burn was based on the website stating that there would be burns this year. I have not stated that this is one, it is in the form of a question. I was told by a firefighter this morning about it jumping the road, sorry if this is erroneous. I am not making up rumors. Thank you for the clarification if in fact these are the facts.

Oh my gosh, wild fires are so scary and unpredictable. When I lived in Oklahoma (I love it there), we had real dry seasons where we had grass fires, along with the Oklahoma winds - it could cover an area quickly. Scary. Stay safe - keep us posted. - Carla

We had wildfires here in Brainerd Mn the year after our big tornado (in 2001) - what a mess.. The tornado got us but the fire was stopped before our property.

I drove by the sight of the fires and couldn't get over the smoke. It has been reported that about 2,000 acres burned...Wild fires are very scary...
