A Walk In The Park

I went for a walk in the park with my Bride after dinner tonight and I had to take a couple of pictures. The first one is a challenge to Roy Kelley as I am hoping he can tell us what kind of flowwer this is. The plant looks a bit like a cabbage and is about 18 inches tall.

The next picture just shows all the great colors of Fall and Summer sharing the same time and space.

Teddy

Last of all I'm just throwing in a look through the zoo fence at an odd couple that has been together for several years. This pelican has mated with a snow goose and nothing ever seperates them.

Bob, I can tell you that is an ornamental cabbage. Now, Roy Kelley can probably get specific and give you the horticultural name. :) The Parks & Rec folks are to be commended for their colorful plantings.

Pat Starnes they do a fantastic job every year. It's a pleasure living next to the park.

William Feela I don't know if they treat that statue with something or what but I've never seen pigeons on Teddy. The pigeons are certainly around.

I planted some of those cabbages last fall and the nursery called them ornamental cabbages. They faired well all winter long.

Debbie Reynolds are you saying they are perennials, like a bulb plant? That would be really cool.

Bob, it is an ornamental cabbage.  We have them all over the place.  They're pretty cool looking, but I've never tried to turn one into cole slaw.

That raises an interesting question Patricia Kennedy as to if it is actually related to the cabbage we eat or not. Maybe Roy Kelley can answer that one for us?

Good morning Bob,

Throw some corn and they will come flying and I do not believe the flowering cabbage plant is edible and is from the Kale family.

Make yourself a great day.

Decorative ornamental cabbage plants are also popular in our area.

Ornamental cabbage and kale are . . . are edible, although they tend to be more bitter than the edible cultivars (and the pretty colors turn an unappetizing gray when cooked). Ornamental kale leaves are often used as a garnish on plates in place of parsley.

Bob "RealMan" Timm I am glad Roy Kelley commented, but I think the town would be a bit upset if you decided to start harvesting the ornamental cabbage and kale. In any case, a walk at this hour appears relaxing with some solitude available.

Not to worry Sandy and Norm, business has been very good so I can send my Bride to the grocery store with no worries.

Thanks Raymond E. Camp , it sounds like Roy Kelley has found evidence that they are edible... but then again an old shoe is edible.

Thanks Sheila Anderson I decided I need to take pictures now before the canvas goes white for 6 months.

Yea Roy Kelley , thanks for weighing in and clarifying all my questions. I nominate you as the official Active Rain horticulturist.

How colorful that flower bed is with those cabbage plants, Bob!  I also like the statue.  Nice scenes of your community!
