Another seemingly less demonstrative but definitely a potentially hazardous situation is when power is lost to a particular outlet or circuit. Many homeowners ignore this issue, chalking it up as a simple annoyance. But, it can actually be part of a serious electrical issue that should be looked into.

Rei, I hear you. I also live in the hurricane belt and have a wired-in stand-by generator with an automatic transfer switch.  If I lose power you can count out 7 seconds and by then the generator powers up and takes over; when the power comes back it shuts itself down.  I love it!  And bonus, if you are a home-based office it may be tax deductible.
