Ask an Ambassador: how to get people to actually READ your posts?

I have a few pieces of advice on this.  Today I clicked on a post and I didn't read it.  It was a tiny print wall of words. It may be really good content. But the fact is, I have really old and tired eyes. And I'm human and it's human nature to want something you are looking at to be look good. That's why newspapers always had photos above the fold.  To attract and keep attention.  A newspaper box with a paper that is a wall of words will not generally sell out, one with photos will. (I spent seven years working at newspaper in my previous career)

So my first piece of advice to is read Craig Daniels ' post on inserting images.  And do one more step for me and add some space around your photo. And put it with text wrapped around to the top or the left.  Another tip is to never make a graph or photo wider than 640 pixels or it looks wonky on phones and tablets. Adding some clip art, photos or graphs makes it easier to read and more appealing.

Spacing matters too and this is something I need to work on myself.
Addling a extra break between paragraphs can help break up a post even if you don't have art. But please put some art. Mind you don't just cut and paste, but make sure it's free to use for commercial purposes, a paid service you subscribe to or something you own or your own photo. Copyright matters people.

Have you noticed each new paragraph I start out bold. That too gives more interest and keeps people reading. Paragraphs of just a few sentences are best to keep someones attention as well. You want to cover a topic, but you need to have photos or something to help break up the text and make it visually appealing.

The last thing I'd like to address is size. Have mercy will you, make it a larger size than the default font. This is 12pt and my opinion is this should be default minimum, but nobody ask me when they were setting up the editor. But seriously isn't larger better than the default size? In case you can't see that it's says "But Seriously isn't larger better than the default size?"

Poor newbie blunders. I am like you, won't even read the wall of words. I know also that there have been suggestions on the 1000 word post - honestly, I can't make it.

Tammy Lankford,

I've written a few of those, but not many. I know they work and rank well and even have readership. I hate reading them and I hate writing them. But oddly enough I read your comment and you triggered an idea for a long, but easy to read post.  I'm going to go work on that for a few days.

I use 14 point and ussually color my text blue.  Like all your suggestions and I should use more photos.  I am not sure about Bolding the start of Paragraphs as I wonder how that effects the Google Bots and my SEO.   I bold key words and topics.

Tammy Lankford,

Bob Stewart commented above that it doesn't harm SEO at all.

Tammy - this is great information for all bloggers, not just newbies.  I can't tell you how many times I have clicked on posts and closed the tab as quickly as I opened it.  I don't like to read and get very turned off by a wall of words.  I use 14-pt Calibri.  I think it's a cleaner font.  I set it up as the default font on my website too.

People's eyes are wondering looking for words and try to visualize. If there is an illustration it leaves a great impression. This is really a great blog to reinforce what we all know.

You hit on several of my pet peeves. Not enough white space. A wall of words. Small font size or a color that's hard to read.
