Ticks are Still Active, Check for Ticks After Fall Walks.

Remember the Ticks are Still Active, Don't Forget to Check for Ticks After Those Fall Walks.

I took a break to go look at a woods today with one of my Foresters and came back with nearly a dozen tiny little Deer Ticks.

Whether you are hunting, hiking or just looking at rural properties, it is good to remember that these fellows are still active and looking for victims.

Deer Ticks are tiny and hard to see but they are the dangerous ones, so it pays to do a tick check, get your clothes in the washer, and jump in the shower soon after getting home.

This may also be a good time to review this post from earlier this year and follow the advice.

Tick Checking, an Important Job that can be Fun

Though ticks are around throughout the year, we are now in the hieght of Tick Season in this part of the country.

You don’t have to go anywhere near the woods to be found by a wood tick or a deer tick.  We find most of them are lurking in the grass between the road and the woods and sometimes even in our lawn.

When I was a kid we did not get too excited about ticks, they were just a part of summer.  Lyme disease was not something that we had heard of yet but we still did a daily tick check just because we did not want one of these frisky little blood suckers ballooning up on some hidden part of our body.

When I was in college during the early 80’s Lyme disease became a serious and somewhat mysterious issue with ticks, worse yet it was in the wood tick’s tiny cousin the Deer Tick.

Now tick checks became a neccessity, and a check for the deer ticks is not an easy check since these fellows are TINY.

Though the disease can be serious, I still don’t get too concerned about these little fellows.  Most of the time they reveal themselves by bumping into hairs as they travel up your body and can be picked off and disposed of.

Also most of them will be washed off if you take a shower within a few hours of picking up a tick.

And for those ticks who get by this step, it can be fun to have a friend (generally your spouse) do a check either in the shower or afterwards.

But if all of this fails and you do get one of these fellows embedded on your body, especially if it shows the telltale bullseye type target around the tick or if you are feeling like you have the flu in the summer, go see a doctor where they will start you on an antibiotic treatment.

Thanks to Margaret Rome for the song suggestion, though I may know a lot about Ticks, I don't know much about country music so I had not heard of this song until now.

I read an article just the other day that stated that ticks ... lyme disease ... could be a possible cause of chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia, Bob Crane ... so checking for these little critters is important for a variety of reasons.  We still don't know all the fallout from exposure ...

you dirty ole man, here i think i am just reading a harmless but informative post abut ticks. and i have to check for them  almost every day, THEN you spring a pic of your assistant showering.. and suggest a "friend" help check. i suggested to mrs rock that we hire a tick checker. female and a ex body builder (so as to protect me from the ticks) however she found no humor in the idea. guess im the dirty ole man now :)

Good advice, Bob.  We have deer ticks and the accursed seed ticks; both are still very active here in Northwest Florida.  Always, always, always do a "tick check" after coming out of the woods or even when walking through high grass.

Bob I'm wanting to check for ticks and I haven't even been out hiking.  I so remember having to do this when I lived in MN.

It has always amazed me that a tick can start out so small, but quickly balloon up when it finds a proper host.  Fortunately, we don't have them here in the Sacramento Valley.  But, up the road a bit, in the Sierra Nevada Foothills, we can encounter them.

Good morning Bob. You are so right, something we need to pay attention to, especially in the more rural areas. Great advice for everyone.

Make it a great week!

Bob Crane I am so surprised that after spending years tramping the woods of Upstate New York and Maine, I never encountered deer ticks. Know people who succumbed to Lyme Disease; not a pleasant end.

Good Monday morning Bob Crane -

After a few days wilderness camping we really checked Dixie Dawg for ticks.  In fact Debbie had me make sure she didn't have any in her long hair too.  Ticks are to be taken serious.
