Great Blue Heron Grabs a Bite!- You Tube Thursdays

By

Fishhawk Lake is teeming with possibilities for wildlife videos and I get lucky now and then being there at the right time!

This Great Blue Heron was hanging out at the main dock by the Community Lodge at Fishhawk Lake. I could tell that it was more interested in food than me being across the lake shooting video. He is less shy than some I've seen in the past up here.

When I shot this, I was quite far away, and didn't know what he'd caught til I viewed the video. Had no idea they eat these!

Check out my YouTube Video Channel Gayle Rich-Boxman for more videos of wildlife at and around Fishhawk Lake as well as more community localism videos.

Mr Heron did not eat a lot, what was that  some sort of flying object? On a side note used to watch the Blue Harons when we lived in Marina Del Rey...noise bunch, but majestic:))Endre

Gayle, there's nothing better than watching nature! My parents have a quite a few Herons on their tidal pond and it's so fun to watch them catch their next meal. Entertains me for hours.

Endre Barath, Jr. he came by the other day, landed right next door, with a big ole fish in his mouth and by the time I had raced into the other grabbed my camera and raced back (maybe 10-15 secs, tops) he had already eaten it. First time I've ever seen this! (And I've been lakefront for 5 years).

Oh, Amanda S. Davidson the wildlife ABOUNDS out here. I keep finding new birds.

Without my camera mentor Dick Greenberg , I would never have been able to fulfill one of my dreams--to get photos of these elusive characters on the lake and now to have captured video of him feeding, along with the sounds of the other birds AND fish jumping behind him--except for your smarts and techie camera knowledge and guidance as a friend. Forever grateful, buddy!

Debb Janes I'm just doing my level best to capture absolutely as much as I can before leaving my venue for the ranch. So happy that you have YouTube Thursdays to give me a place to show my stuff.

See you in a week!

Your tenacity and patience is astounding Gayle!!! I actually watched this with my New York sound bite mentality and could not wait to see what this gorgeous creature caught!!! I think the heron ate a dragonfly but no matter what, I am fascinated by your ability to brand yourself by aligning with the natural wonders and activities on Fishhawk Lake

Joanna Cohlan I am stealing these last moments for myself, holding onto to them with great and simple pleasure because my life in this place is about to change and I am marking it down daily, visually. Yes, it took a bit for him to "come up with something" other than his standing countenance, and if I knew how to edit, I certainly felt the need to speed things up, but alas I'm still quite the novice at this. Once life settles a bit "on the ranch", come winter I may find those times to cut and splice to make that moment come a bit faster! (You are so funny to tell me in your quick-witted way how you were feeling! Just love ya for that!)

Gayle,

Love the blue heron, we see them in the salt marshes behind our area, and we see them on the beach.  We also had them land in our field in Napa.  They are majestic birds not doubt about that.  I also agree with Endre Barath, Jr. they are noisy.  A

Gayle,  So much fun to be so close and be able to capture such amazing videos.  What did it eat?  It looks like a dragon fly.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel I was told by a Native American woman that they represent Patience. I've seen them often as-of-late. And the message isn't lost on me!

Kathleen Daniels yes! A dragonfly--and they are really fast, so this heron was obviously snatching pretty quickly. I had no idea, thought they mainly ate fish. Who knew? I felt pretty blessed to have captured this moment. I was easily 50 yards away, I'd say.

Do you mean the dragonfly or the blue heron?  In Native American Ron  and I have hawk medicine!    In Ayruvedic astrology we have big cat tendencies...love all this symbolism A

Ron and Alexandra Seigel the heron. Not surprised about the cat energy. I have been drawing lots of bird energy as-of-late. And the cat eats birds, oops!

Ed Silva yes, VERY intense. I figured it would be something in the water he'd get, not something in the air!
