TOYS IN THE TOY BOX

Once a upon a time, in an era of small word, children played with toys and kept them in their toy box. There were dolls, blocks, trains, balls, stuffed animals, and wonderful surprises hidden at the bottom of the toy box. Children played for hours in their toy box and they used their imagination to learn how to draw, make animal sounds, pretend they were a mommy or daddy, doctors and nurses too! When it was play time, kids happily entertained themselves, but if they were lucky enough to have siblings, they all shared the same toys and played together with friends. No toy was every left alone. At the end of the day, all the toys went back into the box. But during playtime, kids world came alive like magic!

But then technology came along there were fewer and fewer kids who played with these ancient toys. Today, many kids don't even get to stay home to play because their parents work, so they may get stuck at Day Care. Older kids walk around with wires plugged into their ears listening to Ipods and they play with their computer devices. There are many games for them to play by themselves too. If they do have friends, they are secret friends and they live inside the INTERNET. Toys today are possibly more expensive than their parents or grandparent's first automobile. Many tech toys and interactive games get replaced regularly because of obsolescence and newer technology.

Every now and then, I see a toy box like this, and it puts a smile on my face. But the buyers I showed houses to last weekend made comments that the house looked dated and too old. Nope, they weren't interested in any older homes and paid no attention to the toys who I think needed hugs from children. But the mommy and daddy scurried their kids with the wires in their ears out the door. Secretly, I really wanted to sneak back in to give those toys a hug.

I kept our son's old toys. His 4er old is having a good time with GI Joe, tanks.

Got two sets of fire truck made of metal....

These Coke cans turned to Japanese toys stamped occupied Japan.

When I grew up we used match boxes making our own tanks.... The doll was what girls were playing....

And there also used to be these things called board games, which my son told me when he was growing up were actually called "bored" games. Whether that was because no one played them and the games were bored and lonely or because compared to online games, they seemed boring, I thought it was an interesting comment.

I believe technology can get the creative juices flowing for kids as well.  It is all a matter of how things are applied.  I am sure much of the time 'older children's' parents would preferred them doing homework rather than playing.  Different generations...different challenges.  Make it a great day,  Mark

Good morning Patricia Feager, MBA, GRI, Cert Negotiations Expert, Military Relo Prof ,

I saved the wonderful toys my children had and our grandchildren love to play with the wooden cars, trains, trucks that were made by an uncle. I have them in a big basket and they know right where they are. They have boxes and baskets of wonderful toys at home too and play with them all the time..they especially love their books! Its so fun to see them excited and creative playing with their toys..technology is part of the equation but doesn't have to be the only thing they do. It is a challenge in our technology driven world . I love your photo and the post!! Thank you as always for your wonderful inspiring messages!!

Oh boy so much to say on this one.

1.  Mrs. Beasley!  I loved Family affair.... Buffy and Jody, and Sissy!

2.  Reminds me of a picture of me when I was little.

3.  My grandbabies have toy boxes in their playrooms full of toys. I have lots of toys for them when they are at my house too.

4.  I saved lots of my kids' toys and my grandbabies now play with them.  This McDonald's from the 80's is one of their favorites.

Patricia times have changed from when you and I raise were parents of young kids.  I many ways today's children are cheated out of  the experiences children of past generations had.

Years ago, before grandkids, I got a box of 101 tiny toy dalmations from Disney. All in different positions, some with little cars, some in dog houses, and all have moveable parts. They were promoting the new movie and it was an item to get us ( radio announcers) to talk about it coming out at the theaters. I gave the box to my sis who had little grands at that time,  they ended up with one of her daughters. Recently, my sister gave the box back to me.  Two weeks ago, a set of grandkids came to visit - 4 and 6 year olds. They played with those little toys for hours - it was heartwarming. Love this post, Patricia.
