Use the motivational approach when your team members seem bored or lack enthusiasm, then you need to inspire them to reach their best performance by encouraging them to have renewed interest, excitement, or enthusiasm for their job roles. •· Set a positive example of an enthusiastic, energetic performance. Leading by example is a powerful motivational tool. •· Catch the team members doing things right, and commend them for it on the spot. This can be as simple as sending out an email to the whole team, pointing out that someone in the group has done well or exceeded expectations, or leading the group in a round of applause. •· Praise the team members for their efforts. This is obvious when team members reach their goals, but less obvious when they are trying hard but still struggling to achieve. Make it a point to praise early, often, and in public. •· Support and recognize team members' accomplishments. If there is a company recognition program in place, make sure that you nominate your team members for awards or have their efforts recognized publicly along with other employees (unless you have a team member who is uncomfortable with a public display of recognition; then acknowledge privately). •· Consider instituting a "Friday hero" program, in which you celebrate the accomplishments of one of your team members each week. •· Share positive news about the company and the department with the team. Communicate news of progress and opportunities so that the team members know that their efforts are making a helpful contribution to the company's overall mission. -------------------------
