OCTOBER - Fire Prevention MONTH
A Critically Important “Must Do” for October
Did you know fires kill more Americans than every natural disaster combined? It’s true. Nearly half of all home-fire deaths occur while family member sleep between 11:00 pm and 7:00 am. It is believed by Fire Safety Experts that half of these deaths could have been prevented with a “Smoke Alarm”.
Hear the Beep Where You Sleep - is this year’s NFPD theme. Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm! On Halloween night almost a thousand home fires occur annually. Two out of every five fires occur because of a lit and forgotten candle.
Before you invest in Halloween costumes this year, take action. Invest in enough smoke alarms to have installed (in every bedroom, hallway, and in the kitchen) long before the holiday. Children are the most vulnerable in a nighttime fire. Then create a plan and teach even your youngest child how to “get low and get out” when they hear the sound of the the smoke alarm Beep.
Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871.
Historically, October 9th has been Fire Prevention Day. In 1920, President Woodrow Wilson issued the first National Fire Prevention Day proclamation, and since 1922, Fire Prevention Week has been observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9 falls.

Smoke Alarm Detectors – Battery Life
If the smoke alarm is powered by battery, it runs on either a disposable nine-volt battery or a non-replaceable 10-year lithium (“long-life”) battery. Do a Battery Check at the beginning of every month. Alarms that get power from your home's electrical system, or are “hardwired,” usually have a back-up battery that will need to be replaced once a year.
