Hidden Toxins That Can Kill Your Dog...Check Your Pantry

Hidden Toxins That Can Kill Your Dog...Check Your Pantry

Yesterday my cousin in South Carolina, Caroline, notified me of a toxin hidden in foods that can kill dogs. It was from a dog rescue newsletter she had received.

Dr. David, McGrath, DVM has determined that toxins inside low calorie sweeteners that go by the name of XYLITOL can kill our fur babies. Apparently 2 sticks of gum can kill a 10 pound dog. More and more foods are using this compound to sweeten foods for human consumption. This is just another reason why we should not be giving our dogs table scraps. Other foods include candy, Powdered teas and coffee sweetened, peanut butter, and mouthwashes.

Other names to look for are birch sugar, birch bark extract, and Xylite. Many times the advertisers say "Natural" to make us think the product is good for us. Most of these products have a high content of alcohol and this is what kills the animals.

Interesting enough, the doctor does not think it effects cats like it does dogs. Of course this is good news but probably not good to give it to them either.

Kristin what a great public service message...our pets only eat top quality pet food...age and health approved by our Vets....not only is human food not good for them but some of them develop skin rashes from human food...Endre

Hi Endre Barath, Jr.

I was talking to someone recently and their dog had a terrible rash, itching and took meds that never seemed to help. One of her friends asked her what kind of food she was feeding her dog. Whatever brand it was it had Lamb I think so the friend had suggested that many dogs were allergic to lamb and it caused this same reaction. She had switched to something like IAMS with no food coloring, no lamb and lots of good nutrients and lo and behold, her dogs rash went away and no more meds or itching. I cannot remember for sure but pretty sure it was lamb that caused the problem so sometimes it is worth a try to switch foods and see if that is a simple fix.  We do give our dogs a bite or two of baked white chicken w/o any seasoning on it sometimes but other than that we only feed them IAMS and Wilderness Blue mixed together.

Hi Lisa Friedman

I did not know they put low calorie sweetners in peanut butter either. We get so complacient that we just grab something off the shelf if it has a well known brand and never question the label. If I do check it, it is for the fat grams or sugar grams.
