Do You Have a Plan If You Get a Mandatory Evacuation Order

Be Prepared

Do You Have a Plan if You Get a Mandatory Evacuation Order

This week while I was away at a Women's Council of Realtors Conference in Northern California, my husband was at home with our two dogs.

He got a knock on the door at noon and when he opened the door, it was a Deputy Sheriff letting him know that there was a major gas leak nearby and he had to evacuate RIGHT THEN.

He put on the dogs halters and leashes and put them in the car and drove out. About this time he called me to alert me of the situation. We thought the best thing to do was take the dogs to our regular place about 8 miles away and board them for the night. Of course we had no appointment but they welcomed our fur babies with open arms and that made one less thing for us to worry about.

Do you know what you would do in an emergency? Do you have an evacuation plan? Do you have your plan written down where you can find it ASAP? I know these things because I used to live in a woodsy area and several times we were on standby to evacuate so I made a list of items to put in my car so if I was in shock or extremely distraught, I did not have to stop and think. Certain things on my list included:

  • Medications for anyone in the household
  • Get seniors and small children ready to leave house.
  • Round up the pets and get their collars and halters on plus meds and dog food for them too.
  • Important documents: deeds, pink slips, birth certificates, receipts of household items, wills or trusts etc.
  • Laptop Computers, purses and wallets.
  • Pictures that cannot be replaced
  • Jackets or Sweaters
  • Baby or Elderly items necessary: Walkers, Wheelchairs, Diaper Bags, Change of Clothing, Baby Food.

Now sometimes on evacuation standby, you have time to get these things together but other times you have to go right then as in our case. If the Fire, Flood or a Hazardous Gas leak is eminent, then you must just grab all in household and go. Always a good idea to back your car out of the garage and down at the lower end of your driveway or in front of the house. If the house would start burning, your garage could go up in flames with your car inside.

At this time I want to thank the Pet Boarding place, Renaissance Pet Resort and Spa, where we took our darlings for safe keeping so we did not have to worry about them getting out of the car or barking with all the confusion going out with other residents and their pets coming and going.

Kristin, I like to think were ready after Hurricane Katrina. Many things are backup in several place such as the cloud. My dogs and medications are my biggest concern.

Hi Ronald DiLalla,

It is so important to 'be prepared'. I was a police officer for so many years and I have seen many bright and intelligent people just freeze so a list is good. Always have a plan and since I live in CA, we all should have an earthquake preparedness plan in place.

Having an evacuation plan is important for anyone.  You never know what might displace you, but being prepared to be out of the house with what you need is a good idea.

Looking For Homes With A Smile

Kristin, California is such a beautiful State.  I was out there in 1999, when Kerry Stayner abducted and murdered the three women at the Yosimite Lodge.  My wife and I were entering the Park and driving around, unaware of the events of the previous night.  We saw all sorts of law enforcement, K-9 units, Sherriff's deputies on skis and others with snow shoes.  I told my wife, it probably was a  serarch for a missing child.  Later, that night we learned from News Broadcasts.

We saw portions of forest that had burned in various parts of the State; but honestly, I expected more evidence of fires.  I see WHY having an evacuation plan and lists would be vital to survival.

In 2010, we had major floods in the Nashville area.  Much flooding destroyed homes in the 100 Year Flood Plain, it even set new records for 500 year floods.  One of our most popular Tourist Hotels and Shopping Mall encured damage so severe that some business were 18 months or more in reopening.  Life comes with few guarantees.

Thanks for making everyone THINK about things we tend to dismiss.

Kristin- I talk about being prepared for a hurricane but in that case we always have plenty of time to get ready. In your case, I do wonder just what I would do.  Thank you for this reminder because it never hurts to be prepared to leave ASAP.

Kristin,

That type of knock on the door is something no one wants .  Nice shout-out for the pet boarding and a great list for being prepared for worst case situations.

Ugh, I wouldn't want that knock!

I'd probably just grab family members and our dog, and my bag, and go.  But I should do a better job being ready just in case.

Only happened once to me. I was at MD Anderson cancer center in 2008 when when everyone at the hosptial and the adjoining hotel were alrted to get out of Houston because of Hurricane Ike. My wife and I packed in 20 minutes, headed to the car and drove to Baton Rouge. Because of the traffice we barely made it on gas. Always have a full tank would be my added recommendation.

I used to live in a hurricane prone area, so evaculations were fairly routine. You offered excellent advice on grabbing the important legal documents (I'd add my insurance policy). I keep a blanket in the SUV at all times (you never know). And backing the car out to the street is brilliant! In case of a power outage or fire, etc., it's essential to be able to get out of the garage safely. Well done!

I think my biggest concern in an evacuation would be wrangling my cat in to her cat carrier. She hates that thing and we could lose valuable time trying to get her in it.

No - I never thought about any of this.  One always assumes it will never happen to you . . . until it does.
