The Worst Garden Pest You Can Have in Cedaredge

When visitors come to Cedaredge they love watching the many, many deer that hang out around town. The deer are everywhere. They cross the streets and don't pay attention to the crosswalks. They expect you stop for them. I usually do because I'm a nice person that way.

The deer taunt the dogs and make them bark. They make you do sudden stops on the highway which is in no one's best interest. They also eat your garden. If you want it to grow...you have to fence them out. I have an six foot tall fence all the way around my veggie garden.

The Worst Garden Pest You Can Have in CedaredgeThe deer don't just eat veggie plants. They go after all kinds of plants, shrubs and trees. There are plants that will grow here which the deer don't like. Even if they won't eat them, I have had the deer pull them out of the ground. This can be very frustrating, but profitable for the local garden shops.

I missed the photo opportunity with this picture. I was in my car, and driving to a friend's house. When I first spotted this deer, it was actually sampling some of the plants out of the window planter.

The deer come in all shapes and sizes. There are big deer and little baby deer. There are teenage deer, too. They can have big racks or small racks. (Out here rack=antlers.)

Although the deer are often fun to watch. I had a momma with her two babies spend a lot of time in my yard over the summer. I watched the spotted fawns turn into young deer that want to eat my garden.

While the deer might be plentiful and a big pain, you learn to live with them just like they have learned to live with you. This is rural America at it's best. It's not uncommon to see the deer spending time at our local park or cruising their way across Main Street.

I've lived on Colorado's Western Slope for over 24 years. I love this area and all it has to offer, and I enjoy sharing what I know about my home. As a REALTOR®, I also love to share my expertise in this area as well. If you need any real estate information for Montrose County, or Delta County, Colorado...please give me a call.

Yes, Debbie Gartner ...how come the deer can't read the deer crossing signs. It would be easier for everyone..including the deer. LOL.

We have so many of them. Thanks for stopping by.

Hi, Sharon Lee ...moles are certainly bad and probably as bad as deer. I've got several remedies for them that I've heard about and never tried if you want to know about them. Thanks for stopping by.

I'm so glad you love your garden hating dog, James Dray . Dogs are like kids...they do the darnest things and each one has it's issues. Although I prefer my dog to kids, because he actually listens ( most of the time ). He also does things I don't like, but he's sorry for those actions and he's cheaper to keep around.

Hi, Anna Banana Kruchten ...you got it right. The deer are just part of living in Colorado. Plant around them and hope for the best.

Hi, Dick Greenberg ...I plant a giant veggie garden every year. I've fenced the deer out. The fence is still holding. As long as that works...well I don't care what the deer eat. If they trim my lawn...I'm all for it, but they never seem to do enough of that and I have to mow anyway.

Hi, Robert (Bob) Gilbert ...when you live in my area of Colorado you just learn to live with the deer.

Hi, Larry Johnston ...we not only have the deer, but the skunks and raccoons, too. Although they are rarely a problem. The deer aren't really an issue with me, either. I fence them out and don't plant what they want to eat in the other areas. I do get a bit upset, though, when the deer sample and pull up the plants I'm trying to get started.

Hi, Rebecca Gaujot, the Go To Realtor® ...I know exactly what you are saying. I've fenced off everything I don't want the deer to eat or rub against. It all has a fence.

Hi, Grant Schneider ...if you don't want the deer...you have to fence them out. We have so many of them. They are like ants around here. So I do fence them out. When I plant a new shrub...I fence it off. It works.

Hi, Gabe Sanders ...I guess you probably have more of a reptile problem in your area. At least they don't eat your garden. Thanks for stopping by.

We have snakes.  Though not many poisonous ones and they tend to stay away from people and eat bugs and rodents.

Debbie, a fenced yard would be great, but we are not allowed to have fences in our community...a bummer.

Debbie Laity It is interesting how the deer will play with the plants.  They can really be mischievous and playful.

Hi, Gary Coles ...I do see them playing with each other, too. It's pretty neat. I kind of have a love/hate relationship with them. They are nice to look at, but they can be a pain in the rear, too.
