Waterside Plaza is a residential and business complex in the Kips Bay area of Manhattan, along the East River. The location was actually constructed out of rubble brought over from the U.K city of Bristol after WWII. The debris had been used in the hulls of U.S. ships as ballast, and was then reappropriated as landfill to create the area now known as Waterside Plaza. Constructed in 1973, the complex is made up of four residential towers and a row of red brick duplex townhouses. In addition to the 1,470 residential units, there is also a health club –open to residents and non-residents alike --, a parking garage, and retail space that houses a dry cleaners, nail salon, café, and Gristedes supermarket, among other things. Waterside Plaza is unique in that is it the only residential complex in Manhattan that is located east of FDR Drive. This also means entryways are limited, giving the area a high level of privacy. The Plaza is only accessible to vehicles along 23rd Street. There is also a footbridge at East 25th Street that allows pedestrians to easily cross FDR Drive.
