Columbus Day is a National, International Holiday But Not for Realtors®
Today the second Monday in October is set aside to celebrate Columbus Day in most of the US. Columbus was given the credit for the discovery of the Americas, others argue that there were many before him dating back centuries before. There is some evidence that the very first exployers could have been the Chinese.
Columbus Day is October 12 marking that day in 1492. It was unofficially celebrated by many cities in the 18th century but became a Nationally observed holiday in 1937 under President Franklin Roosevelt. Later in 1971 it was designated to be celebrated on the second Monday of October when the Federal Government was trying to make longer weekends for state and Federal workers.
Since it is a 3-day weekend for many, it becomes a busy weekend for Realtors® showing houses. So many Realtors® do not take the day off and choose to work with clients that are available with a day off.
Back in grade school we would do art projects and sing songs depicting the discovery. Now many of the schools have their fall breaks and are not even in school the week of Columbus Day.
I wonder if there is as much special emphasis put on this day like before. I remember this song we children sang recognizing the discovery of the Americas by Christopher Columbus, do you?
In Fourtenn hundred and ninety two
Columbus sailed the ocean blue
He sailed and sailed and sailed
To find this land for me and you.
Here are some other facts you may not know.
Columbus Day is celebrated in some Central American and South American countries, too.
It is celebrated in Spain, the country that sponsored the sailing of Christopher Columbus ships to America.
Some states do not celebrate the day. Are you one of them in Hawaii, Alaska or South Dakota? They do have alternative days of recognition set aside to honor our nation's discovery.
Do you consider this to be a Holiday or a work day?
