Spotlight on Hell's Kitchen/Clinton, Manhattan
Hell’s Kitchen, also known at Clinton, is a neighborhood within Midtown West in Manhattan. The area is located between 34th and 59th Streets, bounded by Eighth Avenue to the east and the Hudson River to the west. Hell’s Kitchen has seen a great deal of development in recent years, and is now filled with prime real estate. Once a high-crime neighborhood over run with Irish gangs, the area has become a sought after location in recent years, due to its gentrification and proximity to other parts of Midtown. To the east, you can easily walk to Times Square and the Theater District; to the south are a number of famous landmarks like the Manhattan Center building, New Yorker Hotel, and the Pride of Manhattan Fire Station; and to the north is Columbus Circle and the beginning of Central Park.
Because of it’s proximity to the many theaters in Midtown, Hell’s Kitchen has long been home to actors and other members of the Broadway community. As a result of this, the Clinton Community Gardens were born, where actors (who mostly work at night) spend time during the day creating and maintaining a garden in what had been an empty lot. Projects like this exemplify the community spirit for which Hell’s Kitchen is known. Recently Hell’s Kitchen has seen an influx of young professionals seeking to move to the newly trendy district, turning it into a great melting pot of young affluent singles and long-time resident families. Hell’s Kitchen has also seen a boom in their culinary scene, with many popular ethnic restaurants, new farm-to-table spots, and a number of street fairs celebrating the cuisines of dozens of countries from Turkey to Greece to Argentina and more.
Due to previous zoning regulations limiting buildings within Hell’s Kitchen to six stories, many of the apartments are pre-war, and often walk-up. The area streets are mostly tree-lined, with a smattering of parks, such as Hell’s Kitchen Park on 10th Avenue between 47th and 48th Streets, and the newer Hudson Park and Boulevard, which is part of the Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project. The Redevelopment Project is also focused on creating new real estate in the area. There are currently plans to building numerous skyscrapers consisting of more than 12 million square feet of new office, retail, and residential space.
