Retaining Wall Posts Are Rotted

We are working on replacing a long section of retaining walls in Cameron Park made of wood. The wood posts, though pressure treated to preserve, are rotten in the center of the post. It appears that the tops and bottoms of the pressure treated lumber was not protected. Most manufactures recommend adding chemical protection to the cut surfaces to prevent this from happening.

Good morning Tom,

That is true now but probably not then or it was planned obsolescence!

Make yourself a great day.

The galvaniztd lag bolt and proximity to irrigation didn't help matters either. Where's the Thompson's when you need it?

I can honestly say that I have NEVER seen a retaining wall on a property that was installed properly or already deteriorating if it is more than a couple of years old.

Retaining wall says, "Don't buy me".

90% of what we sell will have those walls along the shoreline of the lake.  It's important the piers are not cut on the end that goes into the ground and that the top end is site treated as well.

These boards are designed for this contact contact with soil and water, but it has to be done correctly to last. Thanks Tammy Lankford !

Tammy Lankford,

We have a local place that sells. "soaked" treated lumber for seawalls.  And I'm sure they aren't allowed to use what they were using 40 years ago, but I've seen some docks and seawalls that are still in satisfactory  condition that are 40+ years old.  Newer ones don't last that long.

Yeah, I'd say those posts are a bit damaged! We have bad termites here in the desert so any wood to earth contact is not advised.
