Practice Your Perfect Pitch, But Don't be a Robot

We all need to make specific pitches or asks for our business.  Whether it’s a new client or a returning client, your public speaking skills will sell your services for you.  In Highlands Ranch property management we are constantly pitching the entire program over the phone to everyone who will call in.  It’s become pretty second nature to describe our services on the phone.  When we branch out and host seminars or attend networking groups we employ a different set of public speaking skills.

Make sure your pitch isn’t overcomplicated.  Remove most of your buzzwords and industry jargon and see if the core idea is easy to follow.  Don’t rely too much on acronyms or other specific language as you may throw your audience off.

When preparing for your pitch write out the highlights of what you will go over, but never write a full script.  You don’t want to come off unnatural and overly rehearsed.  The more conversational you are, the quicker you can establish trust.  The ability to ad lib can help when people interject with questions, or if you are making small conversation before and after your pitch.  The more practice you have the more natural it all sounds.

Make sure you are paying attention to how you are holding yourself.  Posture is important, and lazy body language can affect a pitch.  This applies to webinars and video calls as well.  You may not be able to make direct eye contact but you are visible on your recipient’s screen.  Don’t appear bored, or check notifications while it is their turn to speak.

The most important thing to remember is not everyone will fall victim to your perfect pitch.  That is okay.  Some people may be shopping around and you are firmly in the middle of a long shopping list.  Just know that unless you are completely unprepared it was most likely not something you did during the pitch.  Follow the aforementioned steps and practice being comfortable talking about your business.  The rest should follow.

Blue Olive Properties will have seminars detailing our entire Highlands Ranch property management program in the coming months.  For more information on how to attend these please call 303-683-2526.
