Got Popcorn Ceilings? Here's How to Properly Remove Them

  • October 14, 2015

Tired of looking at the “popcorn ceiling” throughout your home? You can call in a professional to get rid of it, or you can follow these steps for a quick DIY project this weekend. While the steps are easy, be sure to take your time and be careful for the best results.

Step 1 – This is going to get messy. So lay down plastic sheeting on the floor. Many suggest also lining your walls with the sheeting as well to help keep everything contained. Try and use one large piece to cover the floor and then up the wall so when you are finished, you can simply roll up the wrap and toss it.

Step 2 – Spray the ceiling. Water will help loosen the “popcorn” and make it easier to scrape off. Usually the best tool to use is something along the lines of a bug sprayer filled with water. Anything similar will work but find something with a light but steady stream that you have easy control over to moisten your ceiling to get started.

Step 3 – With the “popcorn” wet, the next tool you will need is a putty knife. The trick here is to not gouge a hole in your ceiling but digging it at the wrong angle. This shouldn’t require a ton of muscle so just slowly, evenly, and in long stroke slide the blade along your ceiling. One of the biggest mistakes people make is quickly running the blade back and forth with too much force. Doing this generally causes more damage and the need for repairs after the “popcorn” is removed. Remember long and slow strokes. It’s important.

Step 4 – Once all of the “popcorn” is removed, you will have a smooth surface to work with. Use a primer paint to cover the entire ceiling. Once dry, you can paint your ceiling whatever color you choose.

This is a quick project but we suggest taking your time with it on your first attempt. Avoid damaging your ceiling by following the steps listed here and not rushing it.
