One thing about living in beautiful north Idaho
that goes without saying is that we place a high value on our rights.
It isn't uncommon to see Don't Tread On Me flying alongside Old Glory on flag poles in rural areas. In fact, my parents have flown one on their flag pole south of town since they bought that house in 1975. Out of curiosity, I looked up the history of that flag, and it's really quite interesting.
Today I saw a really good blog post by the Shoshone County Sheriff Mitch Alexander that addresses trespassing laws. It's just a guess (but a pretty darn good one I'm sure) that it was inspired by the arrival of hunting season, and irate property owners in areas that attract the hoards of hunters out and about all over north Idaho trying to fill up their freezers for the winter.

It seems that the sherrif has had some discussions of late, explaining conditions why he could or couldn't arrest a person for trespassing. I admit that I have been oblivious to homeowner's property rights when it comes to trespssing so this was all very enlightening to me. At the request of a property owner, the sherrif wrote out an explanation of Idaho code in his blog post.
Bottom line is people do not have a right to trespass on your private property and you, the property owner, have some options when dealing with these types of violations. Check out the link above to find out how to comply with the law.
Don't tread on me!
