9 things this Realtor carries in his trunk.

By
Real Estate Agent with Jameson Sotheby's International Realty

Jeffery Stevens wrote a post listing the five must-have items that y'all should be carrying.  He had some good items on that list: a mallet for pounding "for sale" signs into the ground, some light bulbs for your vacant listings, sign riders (of the sold, under contract variety), a broom/dust pan to clean up the occasional "mess", and some cleaning supplies... he suggested "wipes".  Good suggestion.

That's actually a nice list of things you should oughta carry.

So it made me wonder what I was carrying with me... real estate related, and of note... I checked my trunk.  Keep in mind, I live in the Chicago area.. it gets cold here.    Here's a list of what I found, in no particular order.

1) Open house signs.  These are not the single most important thing I carry in my trunk, but other than my spare tire, they take up the most space... and akward space, at that.  They're like a sleeping great Dane, spreading out on the bed, taking up every corner of the trunk with it's lanky spread-out.

2) Booties. They're handy to have around. They work for open houses, or just for inclement weather whilst showing.

3) A spare pair of "new construction" shoes.  I learned this one the hard way, when I was working with a developer doing new construction showings... I figured, no problem.  I can walk the site with my new Ecco loafers without stepping in any mud.  Needless to say I was mistaken.  Sadly mistaken  The shoes were ruined.

4) A decent emergency kit including a good flashlight, an extra pair of winter gloves, a Leatherman multi-purpose tool (pliers, saw, knife, whistle, scr\ewdriver)... basically the swiss-army-knife of your trunk,  mylar blanket, matches, flare, etc...   I know this isn't solely a list of real-estate related stuff... but you'd be surprised how often I've used many of these things for real estate related purposes.  And since we're in our cars so damn much...

5) A leather portfolio with blank contracts, disclosures, extra pens, business cards, etc... I always like to have a pen and a contract on me.  You never know when you're going to need to write a contract on the hood of your car.

6) Mole food.  For some reason my kids started calling people who were "grumpy" 'cause they were hungry ... Moles.  And thereby, high protein snacks to ward of grumpiness became "Mole Food".  I carry a fair collection of Mole foods in my car

7) Little packets of Kleenex, you know... the travel size... to give to clients whilst touring.  I know... I could carry Kleenex in my car, but I like being able to hand them their own personal packet of Kleenex.

8) Those damn reusable grocery bags.  You know the ones that the stores sell you for 50¢-$1.00 in the hopes that you won't completely ruin the planet with plastic bags...   I know, these aren't real estate related at all, but there are so many loose ones in the trunk.

9) Lots and lots of loose listing sheets, brochures from my old listings, and open house sign-in sheets.  I know... I need to throw those out.  I'll think about that tomorrow.

Update: I forgot to mention the small can of WD-40 I always carry... it's useful in sooooo many ways.

so very interesting... so I had to go do a inventory myself.  I have a entire little tool kit that also has zip ties and duct tape which has had so many  uses.

sign rider- sold, open sunday ect

3 pair of shoes, a bit excessive but flats in case my heels are too much half way through the day a pair of sandals  and a pair of rain boots that can be hosed off because all of us need that for walking the property on a nice muddy day.

a camera pack with extra sd cards and chargers for camera, phone.

lots of old loose flyers that I did grab to finally throw away

water bottle nuts and granola for those days we live in our car

tons of lockboxes (lord help me in a rolllover accident)

a big piece of plastic to cover my floor or seat if needed (back to mud)

many  bags for shopping or who knows?

tiny toys in case client brings kids

Now just dont ask me what is all in my purse......lol

I have a small tool box with scissors,  zip ties, pen, change,  trash bags,  sharpie, kleenex,  a few booties and a high intensity  flash light.  And one thing I can not live without being in my car is a power cord to charge my cell.

if you put my cell phone charger in the trunk... I'd have to crawl in there after it.

I have a nice neat canvas 'go bag'. It contains two screw driver (flat & phillips), pair of pliers for hanging/removing signs rom sign posts, utility knife, hammer, 2-3 electronic lockboxes and replacement batteries, two combo lock boxes, a 'contractor pack' of inexpensive smoke detector, 9 volt batteries for replacing smoke detector batteries, duct tape, electrical tape, outlet tester, flashlight & spare batteries, three-in-one oil and miscellaneous other crap that collects at the botton of the bag. No 'mole food' in my car. Anything edible in my car doesn't hang around very long.

I have all of that... except the "neat" part.

Alan May It's been interesting reading what everyone carries in their trunks.  Too hot here in south Florida to carry food and water, but a small coller is a necessity.  I used to carry contracts in a big box until we went paperless.   Umbrellas are a must.

Great list!  Most of the time, I have all but the open house signs in my car.  I have them in my garage and takes me less than 5 minutes to put them in my car.  I have a portable file holder with blank contracts and paperwork in it.  Besides this list, I keep some toilet paper, 2" packing tape, duct tape and WD-40 in my trunk.  I can't count the times that these things were needed.

Thanks for sharing your list,  Alan.  We need to stock our trunk with many of these items.  I especiall like the idea about the extra pair of construction shoes/boots.  I was just out in the backyard of a house for sale the other day and my high heels kept sinking in the mud.

yeah... I hate when my high heels get all muddy.

I wish I only had 9 things in my trunk.  I actually cleaned out my trunk while setting up for an open house.   I couldn't believe how many useful things I had... staplers, tape, sign riders, cleaning supplies, booties, cool neck towels (for AZ weather), cleaning clothes, windex wipes for windows, screwdriver/hammer/tape measure, business cards galore, gift cards, thank you cards, envelopes, stamps, open house flags, but this was the best thing I found... AN UNCASHED $3,000 CHECK!   SO COOL!

and uncashed check for three grand??  woo hoo!

Great post, but I will be honest, I HATE rattling in my car, so I would't carry signs or anything that might rattle in the trunk. You talk about someone that gets on the edge when he hears his car rattling.

Great post Alan, thank you for sharing!  I couldn't help but chuckle because I have several of those reusable grocery bags in the trunk that kept sliding all over the place, so I folded them up and put them all in one big reusable grocery bag, along with other items, such as napkins, booties, hand sanitizers, flashlight, and I managed to throw a few lockboxes in there also!
