Black Mass the Movie: a short review. For those of you who know me a quick refresher in case you forgot. Diane and I moved out from Boston, MA about 18+ years ago. Having lived in Boston for ten plus years I followed the Bulger Brothers Billy & Whitey with great curiosity. Keep in mind one on paper was the upstanding local boy who made good and became the most powerful politician in Boston, MA. His brother the polar opposite, a graduate of Ft Leavenworth KS and  Alcatraz, CA

Needless to say when the Boston Globe made him front page news I read it with great interest and continued reading as the drama was unfolding. Ironically we moved to Los Angeles in the midst of all this... 

The news became fewer and fewer.... and long and behold when the News broke that Whitey was living in Santa Monica it was clear to me that there are parallel lives and we never come in contact. The old saying Six Degrees of Separation. We were living in Marina Del Rey about three miles from where Whitey Bulger was living. We went to the same stores, restaurants etc.

The Book was a page turner and I was a bit skeptical how the movie would turn out. Well let me tell you Johnny Depp was Whitey Bulger he looked, behaved and sounded like him. The movie touched upon the key details of the "Southie Brotherhood" "the loyalties" to where you came from as well as the drama of the Power Struggle of the "Winter Hill Gang" and the "La Cosa Nostra" and the intertwining of the relationships. I appreciate all that.

The movie could not do justice to the number of murders that Whitey & his Gang were involved with as well as it downplayed how the Massachusetts State Police was really the power that brought him down... Needless to say the movie was riveting and powerful, truly a great couple hours.

Geez, Endre, I don't know where to begin. I LOVE Johnny Depp in everything. Some movies more than others, but to me, he stretches himself in everything he does. Coming from a theatre/acting/movie/TV background I look at actors differently and am quite scrutinizing in my critiques. 

I am morbidly fascinated in mobsters... dunno why, as they are horrible human beings. I saw the trailer to this and actually thought the actor who plays the FBI guy (?) was marvelous. It's an all-star cast, right? Anyway, how fascinating that you have this close binding history with this band of brothers. Love the idea that you were so close in proximity....wow. And scary, really.

I did, Endre. It's been forever. Can't recall much, except that it was somewhat painful and I didn't look forward to seeing it again, because it was deeply emotional.

Gayle Rich-Boxman Fishhawk Lake Realtor (503)755-2905  that was a very powerful version of a similar neighborhood in Boston...almost a fictionalized version of Whitey Bulger and deeply troubling...I think Black Mass was a bit weaker/ watered down version.... so you will not have that feeling of "not wanting to see it" again....
