You Can Pick the Neighborhood but Not Your Neighbors

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Exit Strategy Realty

When buying a home you have control on where you want to live but you have no control on who will live next door to you.

Here are some examples of Neighbors you might run up against.

Remember Mr Wilson and Dennis the Menace. Kids in the neigborhood are good to have when you have children yourself except when the kid next door is like Dennis.

You could end up with a neighbor like Archie Bunker. OH Boy is all I can say if you get someone like him as your neighbor.

If you get Glady's as your neighbor then keep your windows and blinds closed as she will be watching every move you make.

Finally you could get Alice and Ralph as neighbors. Of course you will have to listen to this blubber head make noise all the time but you couldnt find a more a more loyal and loving couple to live next door to you.

Good luck in your search for a new home and let's just hope for the best neighbor options.

Jack Lewitz All very true and so many times, I ask my buyers to walk the neighborhood around a home they are considering in hopes of speaking with the neighbors to help give my buyers a more comfortable sense of the area. I have never had a buyer not be willing to take my advice on this.

Excellent point. I often tell potential buyers to visit their preferred neighborhoods at different times and days to get a better feel for the area. Even with that, there are no guarantees.

Great post.  I always encourge buyers to drop by neighborhood on the weekend and evenings to get to talk to the neighbors.

Good morning Jack Lewitz ,

I just caught your post on Patricia Kennedy series she does on her favorite posts. Good one...great examples!! I often encourage my buyers to meet the neighbors while looking in a community....it never hurts to know who you're getting for neighbors! I just subscribed to your post!

This is so true - you can pick your neighborhood but not your neighbors. The only way to figure out what kind of neighbors a buyer might be getting is for them to go knock on doors.. although real personalities might not be shown in a quick "hello."
