Keep Your Home Safe - While it is Listed

When a Seller has made the decision to list their home, it is time to review security of the home.    Who will be coming through?     Are my things safe?    Do I need a safe for my jewelry?    Will the buyers go through the drawers?

Security of a listing

In reviewing security at a listing presentation, I discuss putting away anything to do with your identity - credit cards, bank statements/credit card statements as well as jewelry and anything of value.   If there are guns in the home, they should be in a safe.   If there are prescribed drugs in the medicine cabinet, put them away too, or carry with you while listed.    If you have a family member or trusted friend, let them keep your valuables while home is on the market.

Every agent that sets up a showing at a listing has been through a background check, finger printed, and they cannot have a felony in their history.     HOPEFULLY they know their buyers, and the buyers are viewing the home because they want to buy the home!   But the "buyers" could have called a random agent to see a home they want to burglarize.

It is always best if the Seller removes anything of value while for sale, but sometimes that is not always possible.

Good Sunday morning Realtor Joan Cox -

At listing we always highly suggest that our sellers take all precautions in staying and keeping their belongings safe.

I once told my sellers who had a variety of prescription drugs to put them in safe place. These could be targets too.

Great reminder! My mom had a GPS unit disappear while her house was on the market.

....Experience Isn't Expensive.... It's Priceless!

Hello Joan Cox

Such an important subject to thoroughly cover with our clients.  I liken it to being in a hotel and never leaving anything for anyone to find/take.

Yes, buyers will go through your drawers, especially if it's a built-in dresser in the master or kitchen drawers. I once had buyers open a closet in the hall because something "smelled funny" and sure enough, there were rows of shoeboxes, and they weren't filled with shoes . . .

Hi Joan - removing everything of value is just as important as staging and cleaning the house.  It is best to search all drawers.  Sometimes you find things that were forgotten.

This is excellent advice, Joan. Taking away the temptation is often all that is needed to deter thieves.

Yes, yes, and yes, Joan. Not only all that, but I have my clients actually sign a disclaimer saying I discussed all of this with them, so if anything ever should go wrong they can't say I never told them "to...."

One more suggestion, Joan... I tell my clients to move any kitchen knives they have on counters out of sight for safety as well.

Joan, Excellent advice and many sellers do not follow these tips. There are numerous crooks all looking to make a buck off of unsuspecting people.

Hi Joan Cox ,  Regardless of who lists the home or shows the home, I always recommend the seller to not have valuables and perscriptions where people can access them.  Sometimes an agent shows the home to more than one person.  It only takes a few seconds for one of them to dissapear for a few minutes to go through medicine cabinets and drawers.  I have been in homes, where the even had money laying on a bedroom dresser! I was amazed, that the Listing Agent didn't address that in the beginning.

Joan those are all good suggestions.  I am always surprised that there aren't more things stolen at Open Houses, especially if it is a busy Open House.
