Soaring Into the Twentieth Century!

I just had a birthday. I won’t say how old I am, but while I am not older than dirt, I was there when the shovel was invented. We didn’t have iPhones, and email, and text messages. In fact we didn’t have laptops. Now than I think back, we didn’t even have computers! The first thing I remember being in my house that was computer-ish was an Atari, and we played PONG. I intimidated people with an HP-12C.

It was obvious where we were headed with the first IBM personal computer. I could comprehend that anyone my age was rapidly becoming a fossil in the work force if they couldn’t do rudimentary work on a computer. I went out and bought a 286 with a dot matrix printer for the bargain value of $3200 and change. My neighbors were green with envy since I had the baddest box in town! I was assured it would not be obsolete because it had the expansion slot to make it a 386.

We went through the 386 generation to 486 so fast I didn’t have time to get the card installed. We have been making changes every day since, some better and some not so much. I still pay attention, and for an industry veteran, I can hold my technology water pretty well, but millennials run circles around me.

Fortunately, my company screens all the new garbage out there that is guaranteed to double my sales in ten minutes, so we hear about the good stuff early, and usually have it fifteen minutes early.

FMLS recently introduced the Matrix platform to replace Fusion. I remember learning the old program we started with, and screaming when we went to the new one, and then to Fusion, and I am still screaming about Matrix, just because I get tired of relearning.

However, I will have to say that when they tied me to the wood shed and made me start using it, that it is smoother, faster, more portable, gives better reports. It’s just different and requires effort to learn, and I’m still questioning why we don’t have hitching posts in front of the office instead of handicapped parking!

Not all change is good, but the right change can revitalize your career.

Now where did I leave my abacas?
