Arizona Cactus, Teddy Bear Cholla aka Jumping Cholla
I was out this weekend on hike at White Tank Mountain Regional Park and came across this Cholla with a great background of the sky.
Don't these look super fuzzy. Ahhh, but they aren't. This baby's barbs will stick to your skin instantly. Believe me, I barely brushed one of the joints and it attached to my shin many moons ago. We had to find something to pull it off of my leg. Then pull the remaining barbs with tweezers.
There are soooooo many varieties of the Cholla in the southwestern desert. But I'm pretty sure this is the Teddy Bear (Jumping Cholla) variety. It will be donned with beautiful yellow or pale green flowers March-June and August-September depending on the amount of rain. I've also seen some of the flowers with a redish hugh as well.
