SPAM Isn't Just for Calls Anymore . . . Becoming a Moving Target at Home Depot
This article is inspired by Beth Atalay 's feature "My Best Advice For Real Estate Newbies"
She wrote, and I could not say it any better than this:
". . . Nobody likes to be sold. Imagine walking into a department store and followed by a salesperson who clearly has to make his/her quota or sales goal for the month and you are just another piece of meat they could chew on."
When I read that, I nearly fell out of my chair!
That is -- EXACTLY -- what happened to me last week when I was in Home Depot. I was NOT pleased!
While in the paint section two young men approached me. One was all smiley and he started his spiel: "You've been selected to receive . . . " and it was right at that exact moment that I tuned him out.
"Get to the pitch," I said as unimpressed and monotonically as I could muster. My approach was to vocally flat-line . . . in sincere hopes that he would as well!!
"Pitch?" he inquired.
"Oh . . . you're NOT trying to sell me something?!?" I responsed incredulously.
He never answered that question. He responded to my question with a question of his own.
"Do you own a home?" he asked.
Hmmmmmm . . . what Golden Tongued Pitchman was he trying to emulate with that cutesy tactic?
I'm so annoyed at that point. I'm at Home Depot to shop. What else do people go into Home Depot for anyway? To browse?!? Home Depot is NOT a browsing type store. We need a screwdriver, or a wrench, or the little plastic thing . . . a new faucet, or a nail. We are NOT there to browse.
When I shop I don't want to be a moving target for an up-sell . . . by some young-enough-to-be-my-son upstart!
When the young-enough-to-be-my-son upstart realized that he wasn't going to "close a deal" with me and sell me a brand new kitchen remodel which turned out to be what he was pitching . . .
. . . the PUSHY salesmen blamed ME, as if it was my fault he didn't take "NO" for an answer. As if it was my fault that he wouldn't STOP TALKING!
He said all matter of fact-like: "All you had to say was "I'm not interested."
OH PLEASE!
I said it ten different ways . . . but the pushy upstart was going to make that sale and apparently didn't hear me. Then he, apparently, went off script and got mad at me when I wanted to. . . sail!
Not only was I solicited, but because I didn't say the three magic words -- I'm not interested -- it's all my fault?!?
How about not bothering me when I'm in Home Depot as an up-sell, moving target?
