Facebook or LinkedIn??Sorry no contest the answer is easy!
I was inspired to write this post as a counter point to a Post I read last month on Active Rain!
Seriously the two cannot be compared: they are two different platforms, two different demographics and they serve two different purposes. As I mentioned above, in the recent past, I have read with great interest a blog post by one of the Active Rain Members. The author wrote and took the position which not only surprised me, but I was taken back. Basically he was calling for the imminent death of LinkedIn. Interestingly the writer of this particular post I am referencing and many of the commenters’ position surprised me as well. Hence I did a bit of research. I am not of the belief of supporting things and positions without research.
Initially I Googled the author and I wanted to see how he would be indexed by Google, ironically his name appeared higher with his LinkedIn Profile then his Facebook profile which he was touting. The results did not really convince me nor did it persuade me to run out and focus on this particular Facebook program he was emphasizing. His additional comments that could have enhanced or could have persuaded me with facts or logic was not there either. Although he seemed very articulate about his positions in the post I was still not convinced.
I commented on his post, instead of responding to my comment with logical explanation, he took an arrogant and condescending position, i.e.: if you do not take my view you are behind the times. I find that when someone who takes an arrogant or condescending position, I consider that as being defensive. Why would that be the case? Clearly it makes me suspect of the position being taken.
Hence after I did my little Google search of him and ironically I remained unconvinced. I do not drink Cool Aid….I drink good wineJ.
I turned around and Googled myself and interestingly the results were the same. I was indexed by Google and my LinkedIn Profile was higher than my Facebook Profile as well. Clearly I was not surprised with my results, since I do not focus on Facebook as anything but as a funnel in passing on my Active Rain Blog Posts out to the world of Facebook. At the same time I find that Facebook facilitates me in having connections with friends and relatives. Just as well as people that have similar interest that Diane & I have. Clearly they might not read LinkedIn, Google+ or Active Rain so it is a good place to post my writings to get the word out.
Anyway I am digressing, so then I went a step further and I Googled “the subject” or should I say the controversy of ’ Facebook vs. LinkedIn’ and I found some very interesting articles and they all seemed to support what I suspected all along! LinkedIn is the premier site for Business and Facebook is about everything and not focused on business alone. So based on that I said ‘Self You need to focus on LinkedIn’.
Hence when I did that, I discovered that there are business ways of re-connecting with past associates, classmates and the list goes on and on just like on Facebook. The difference is when there is a reconnection on LinkedIn everyone understands it is about business not what I had for lunch yesterday or dinner.
Just as an example: I reached out through one of my LinkedIn Groups to one of my fellow members who happened to be a Realtor and a US ARMY RANGER, amazingly enough, we had a few back and forth conversations for about three days and we discovered four different mutual connections we knew since the late 1970’s, well how about that! Some people would say that is Facebook, well sorry to disappoint but it was LinkedIn and it is all about business.
The point of my post is: even in a focused business platform like LinkedIn, you can discover long lost associates, friends and can turn that into a business opportunity without paying Marketing Dollars to get your name out like on Facebook. As well as sorry no reason to Toll the Bells LinkedIn is not dead yet nor will it die in the near future!
