Time for a Fireplace/Chimney tune up!

It's getting to that time of the year that everybody has been waiting for.... fire up the fireplace and huddle around the fire with your loved ones and enjoy the warmth and coziness of the fire in your home. But wait... is it safe to use? Lighting a fire in your house may seem to be an oxymoron, but if done safely is a joy!

I have written blogs on fireplaces and chimneys before, even recently wrote one titled  Chim Chiminey Chimney . There are lots of things to look for and check before firing that baby up this fall/winter.

I just had one the other day that had the usual problems, no rain cap or spark arrestor, cracked firebrick in the firebox, buildup of creosote in the chimney. A good practice would be to have your fireplace and chimney inspected and cleaned by a qualified professional Chimney Sweep.

There’s more to a chimney that just a few bricks, pipes and a place to put the fire. Flue liners can crack, so can mortar and bricks!

Fireboxes can crack from excessive heat exposure and water damage, dampers can warp and rust, and smoke shelves can crumble.

Damage from normal wear and tear should be noted yearly and arrangements for chimney repair made.

Using a chimney that hasn’t been inspected involves more risk than just causing damage. Small problems become larger ones when left unchecked. A chimney inspection also involves checking the amount of creosote and soot buildup. Creosote can ignite without a spark if the temperature rises high enough, it builds up in every sort of wood-burning chimney, even pellet stoves. Left to collect, it can ignite from everyday usage and lead to a chimney fire, or even a house fire!

We all want to make our homes safe for our loved ones. Having your fireplace and chimney inspected and/or cleaned should be a priority before use, it sits there all year waiting to be used... make sure it's a joy and not a family tragedy! When is the last time you had yours inspected?

Not needed this year for me, in Las Vegas with no fireplace. I'll tell you though with the temperatures I see in the midwest it is already one of the things I miss the most this time of the year, nothing like a real wood fire.

The metal caps are always a very good, and important, addition.  Water is THE killer of chimneys.

This is a very timely reminder for home owners. Failure to provide needed maintenance can lead to a serious fire. There is a now roofless home in our community that caught on fire from the chimney.

Thanks for sharing this impressive as well informative information. Chimney inspections and cleaning are essential to not only keeping your chimney operational, but to also making sure it doesn't pose a risk to your home. Chimneys should be inspected and cleaned at least twice a year when they are under regular use with the help of professional chimney sweeps Nassau county as ther have relevant expertise in this field.
