Hanging Up to Take Another Phone Call

Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Gold DRE #00697006

Generally when I spot a call coming in on my cellphone, providing I have the phone within my sight because I wear a bluetooth most of the day, I often will send a custom templated text message to the caller if I am not available to answer the call. The reason I would be unable to answer the call is most likely because I am already on a call. I generally don't hang up and grab another call unless I'm about ready to hang up. Otherwise, I keep talking because my business at hand is important.

But I have met agents who will hang up. If I am expecting an important telephone call, like a person I have a super hard time getting on the phone, for example, I will tell the person when I call that I might have to hang up if that particular person calls. Otherwise, all calls go to voice mail and / or receive a text message when I'm on the phone.

You can read more about this pecular practice in my personal blog today at this link: A True Story About Setting Priorities for the Self Employed.

Nothing says "you just are not that important" than someone dismissing a call to pick up another call. I know there are times (should be rare) when we need to get another call. I always tell people if that call comes in I will need to get it and I will call you back.  I did that when my mother was on hospice care. Otherwise, it can wait.

Hello Elizabeth,  I no longer try to put someone on old to tell the 2nd caller I will call them right back.  Unfortunately, lol, it is because I still can not figure my darn phone out and end up hanging up on both parties.  Mark

Good morning Elizabeth. Someone or the other call will have to wait, as I want to make the person I am talking to feel like they are my only client.

Hi Elizabeth.  Lately, I've noticed some folks who automatically (and always) send out text messages automatically when you call saying they are unavailable and to call back later.  I really find this annoying, as I will leave a message for them and think they can call me back when they are available.

Elizabeth, I will hang up only if talking personal with a friend (we all do that) and the other call is one I have been waiting for.

There are very few calls that trump the ones that I am involved in.  And if I know one may be coming in, I let the other party know when we meet or when I take the call.

I love the way you ended with...."Now that you have a live person, you are required to stay on your phone and talk.” I suspect she was stunned, before bursting out in laughter."

I get that stunned reaction when I answer the phone too, Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents ... especially later in the day or on weekends.  LOVED your reaction!

We can handle phone calls in any number of ways that don't tick off another caller ... make them feel unimportant ... cause confusion ... or send the message that you're desperate for business.   Good grief ...
