The rewards of looking up...

Real Estate Agent with NextHome Premier

Looking up reminds me how true the adage is "change your perspective and you change your life".

There is no shortage of reminders that we are in an age where we increasingly "look down" - at our cell phones, upon one another, upon ourselves.   Our obsession with our cell phones and social media in general has us spending more time "on-line" and less and less "in- life".

Our daugther who is living in NYC had that "aha" moment walking in the city the other day.  It struck her that everyone she passed was looking down.

She took a moment and looked up, and was captivated by the beauty of the architecture around her. Streets she walks every day, head down, reading emails and texts....missing it all, until that moment.

Looking up always reveals great rewards and on this glorious fall day, that was especially true for me!

Good morning Jeanne Feenick ,

Congratulations on this well deserved featured post! I notice this all the time..not much eye-contact with so many looking at their phones non-stop during the day! A good reminder to stay in tune with those around us and all that Mother Nature created to please our senses!

I encounter people "looking down" very often and I wonder what invisible weight is at work to forcing someone to do that...Thank you for sharing Jeanne Feenick

I have always prided myself on seeing things that others miss and enjoy pointing them out. It enriches our lives to see the details. Since I am not capable of walking while texting that would not be a concern.

Looking For Homes With A Smile

Helo  Jeanne Feenick .  How are you today?  Jeanne, I have believed that from my youth.  As a teen, I began many mornings sitting between two massive roots of a huge oak tree on a hillside, with a grand canopy overhead, and a babbling flow of cool spring water flowing  at its feet. Looking up, watching squirrels play, and the sun peeking through the leaves.  On rainy days, the leaves drippend with life.  There I sat and prayed.  I wrestled with life's challenges for a young man who's heart was torn by a breakup with a girlfriend, or the impending orders to report for military duty.  Later, there were moments of celebratory prayer upon meeting and marrying a girl who fills my life [48 years now], and the birth of three children.

Dad sold the farm and yet I think of that might oak often.  It is but one of three powerful occasions in my life that taught me to look up into the sunshine, the clouds and the stars to find renewed life, hope, faith and purpose.  I believe the most important thing I found in looking up is INFINITY: I am such a small part of the INFINITE WORK OF GOD, and yet HE CARES FOR ME!  As Jesus said, "Consider the lillies of the field, how they grow: they toil not and neither do they spin; and yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed as one of these."  HE also said "the Father knows even the hairs of your head."  That is beyond comprehension, but I must look up to be reminded that in spite of all the tom foolery in our Nation's Capitol, that "all things work together for good for those who love the LORD."   Thank you for looking up.

As an amateaur photographer, I've discovered looking up and looking at detail is very fascinating.  I took a painting class last winter and it helped me look at things in even another way.  It was great.  Thanks for the post, Jeanne Feenick .  It's always fun to look up, look around, and be amazed.

So interesting to me that you wrote this - I have been planning a "look up" post for a long time!  I just need to get out and take the photos.  Plus, looking down is bad for your neck.

You nailed it. Every one of us need to look away from the devices and look UP to see the beauty all around us. And we are truly missing out on building quality relationships at the same time. Kudos.

Good observation!!  And I mean that on a lot of levels!!  My son is visiting me for a week and I love how he uses his phone for photos -- of the sunsets and sun rises he finds inspiring and awesome.  He does hold his head up.

I like the comment by Ed Silva . So true. Not only that, but things come hurdling down out of the sky when you least expect it, and some of those things might only be acorns but they can do some serious damage. Tree branches, pianos, you never know what might fall on you.

As I don't walk around looking at my phone, I know I get to enjoy a lot of what's around me. Unfortunately so many people don't.

This is good advice. Some of the best fall scenes are seen by looking up and you never know what you might discover when you put away your cell phone.
