Fall Colors in the Northwest Territories

Richardson Mountains Northwest Territories

This photo of the Richardson Mountains was taken several years ago during a September trip on the Dempster Highway, the road that takes you as far north as you can drive in North America. The Dempster runs from Dawson City in the Yukon to Inuvik in the Northwest Territories. It is a 457 mile long gravel road through gorgeous remote wilderness, with basically nothing on it except a gas station/motel/restaurant about halfway up at Eagle Plains, right at the Arctic Circle. By next year, it will extend another 121 miles to Tuktoyaktuk, on the Beaufort Sea.

The  landscape is arctic tundra, and is well north of the tree line. The red color in the foliage is primarily Fireweed.

That is beautiful. I'll have to travel the Dempster Highway someday. This sounds like my kind of trip. I bet you pay a fortune for gasoline at the one gas station.

I've never seen anything like it.  The only treeless areas I've ever seen have dry and sandy.  It's beautiful beyond words to me.

Hi Dick -- I agree with Endre Barath, Jr. this looks more like a painting than a photograph.  Beautiful shot -- this must have been quite the experience to see first hand.  Thanks for sharing.

Great photo Dick Greenberg ... That must have been a pretty amazing trip! I drove up to Prince Rupert in British Columbia, which at the time (several years ago) felt so very far north... But Inuvik is making me feel like I hardly left town. :O)
