Reading Between the Lines of My "Fan Mail"

By
Education & Training with Sell with Soul

I must be honest - getting fan mail from loyal readers is my very favorite thing about being a writer. I wake up fan mailevery morning to several emails from people who have read my blog or my books and just want to say thanks. To all of you who write ... I hope you know how much your notes touch my heart.

Often in these notes, the writer tells me his or her story and often asks for advice. I'm happy to give it, when I can, and those who have written me can attest that I do almost always respond. It's fun for me and heck, I have books to sell, so the more happy customers I have, the more books I'll probably sell.

I hesitate to continue because what I'm about to say may make some of my readers a little uncomfortable.

Reading between the lines of the notes I receive, I'm pretty sure I can tell who is going to make it and who isn't. Now, I obviously don't have any cold hard data to support this claim, but I'm confident I'm right. There is a HUGE difference in attitude between agents who have the mojo to survive and those who don't. Between the agents who truly understand (or at least truly WANT to understand) the process of exchanging real estate and those who just want to know how best to get clients FAST. Between agents who have the confidence in themselves they'll need to project a can-do attitude... and those who are just desperate for a sale.

I wish I could provide some examples so you could see the difference, but obviously that would be uncool. My point is that if it's this obvious to me that someone is struggling -- simply thru their written word, I imagine it must be even more obvious to those in their day-to-day world - those who (whom?) the agent is depending upon for his or her professional survival.

Mojo is really important. Confidence is really important. Knowledge is really important. And you wanna know how you get some Mojo? It's not that hard... Knowledge... leads to Confidence...leads to Mojo.

Keep those cards and letters coming (yeah, right, I probably just scared most of you away!)

Nice blog and very true. Good advice to people. It is sooooo important to stay positive in this business. Unfortunately there are too many negative people around. I choose not to associate with them. I also have a sign in my office that says you control your attitude. It says you determine your attitude based on how you handle things...more specific...10% is what happens to you...90% is how you handle it. I read it every day to keep my attitude positive and head on straight.

Jennifer, Great post as usual, and needless to say, now you have me worried.  As a big fan, I read your posts with great anticipation.  Whenever I head out the door on an appointment, I bring out your checklists to make sure I have everything I need and that my attitude is in the right place.  I follow my own drummer, and I'm doing pretty good, but I depend a lot on doing it Soulful.  After reading your book, I decided that I wanted to do my Real Estate business with Soul, and your books and post have been most helpful.  And yes, on the couple occasions I have sent you an email, you have responded.  That has been most important to me, and I'm sure to all your other fans.  Continued succes to you and keep up the good work.

Bob - you certainly are NOT one of the ones who doesn't get it! I'm sure you weren't really worried. Thank you so much for the good wishes.

Dave - no kidding - it's amazing to me how unhappy people seem to want to be!

Tom - I hope you enjoy it!

Gary - thanks!!

I definitely think that over time, with continuous effort and diligence, anyone can succeed. That's what I know will happen. There are some who do it for purely financial standpoint and those who do it for many reasons including the paycheck, but that's not the first thing they see.

I often listen to Dave Ramsey's call in show and he speaks from time to time about "SMELLING DESPERATION" on someone.  He says it's an instant deal killer but that it is a very real effect in sales.

David - thank you!

Laura - consider yourself (lovingly) kicked

Loreena - I can't imagine being any good at something I don't enjoy - at least - not for long.

Ron - Very true. I can certainly tell the difference in myself, even.

I am glad someone said that.  I feel there is too many negative attitudes, that is the group that will fail.

Good topic, Jennifer. We're dealing with a lot of negative vibes in our office right now. With over 130 agents, it's amazing how negativity can spread faster than a nasty cold. It's easy to get sucked in - it's very, very easy. And I must confess sometimes I'll jump on the bad-wagon and ride along for a while. Let's face it, sitting around complaining is a lot easier than DOING something about it.

Fortunately I can snap myself out of it fairly quickly (although sometimes I have to resort to getting physical with myself - ouch those pinches hurt!). Getting back to business always helps me focus on the FUN of my job (after all, why do it if it isn't fun).

Yuk... enough complaining about the complainers. I have an email to write to my SOI. **pinching self**

Jennifer, when I first contemplated a career in Real Estate I called a local Sales Manager to get advice, opinion, etc.  He basically told me not to do it....not sure what I said to make him say that....I made a game plan of learning the industry from the inside; I would work 2 years as staff in an office and then get my license.  The funny thing is I ended up working at this same office I called.  Worked 2 years, got my license and moved on.  I pretty much "fail" all the tests that determine whether or not I'll succeed in Real Estate ~ but I've chosen not to let a test tell me what my future is.  It all comes down to heart and attitude.  Anyone can make it in Real Estate if they really want to!

I agree with most of what's been said here. Everyone says you need "heart", "a positive attitude", "Get into action!" , This is all fine but what I've learned over the years is you won't get out of a negative mindset until you accept it. Mindfulness if the key. Noticing when you do get bummed out or negative..."oh there I go again", be curious about it, notice what you say to yourself and then how does it make you feel. then you can start to notice you have choice on how you want to proceed. The brain is a tricky thing and it will try to fool you. Catching it in the moment is what allowed me to notice the negative patterns I set up for myself and that provided me with knowing that I could change it.

Jennifer-

As always a good post.  Attitude is what it is all about.  I see people who are desperate for a sale and they are not getting it.  I am positive and it seems to be attracting clients.  Thanks for the reminder of keeping the mojo going.
